More job cuts have been announced at newspapers across the U.S., adding to the news that USA Today and the Washington Times plan to cut staff.
The Miami Herald plans to cut 24 positions across its company, including six in the newsroom, although no reporting positions were affected. The company also plans to reduce working hours for news production departments.
This follows 175 job cuts at the same newspaper earlier this year. "The move is part of our ongoing effort to ride out this unprecedented period of economic turmoil," wrote publisher David Landsberg in an email to staff.
The Las Vegas Sun has also announced the combination of its print and digital staff teams, in a move that could see up to 25 staff lost. The company has not confirmed these figures.
Other sections of the media industry are not immune. Advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather has announced cuts to 90 staff. Hotel reviews website Oyster.com has laid off a third of its staff, and now has 20 full-time employees, reduced from 30. And Newseum, the news museum in Washington, D.C., has cut 29 full-time positions, or 13% of their staff.
