Daily Mail & General Trust free newspaper Metro, distributed in the morning, announces further job cuts as a response to the financial turmoil that is affecting the industry as a whole. The number of redundancies is still unknown, but regional staff working on the Urban Life listings and the reviews section may be affected.
"We have benefited from the implementation of a new editorial system this year which has allowed us more flexibility in how we produce Metro," says Metro Managing Director Steve Auckland.
Auckland also mentions that implementing these changes permits the title to make profits and to boost ventures in digital and green projects, such that in over a year Metro will "emerge in an even stronger position."
According to The Guardian, free papers may be more at risk for the economic downturn plaguing the media industry, since they rely entirely on advertising for revenue.
Metro is published in 16 UK cities.
