US: NYT digital staffers will continue to be paid less

Digital staffers are still getting the short end of the stick at The New York Times, says The Newspaper Guild of New York in a memo reported on by the Silicon Alley Insider (SVI).

According to SVI, NYT and the Guild have resumed negotiations on future wages and benefits, and NYT has allegedly halted its plans to put digital and print staffers on equal footing. The Guild says that the unequal treatment stems from “various business reasons.”

Although digital staffers are arguably the future of NYT, strong labor unions have made it difficult to adapt the existing system. SVI suggests that by treating digital staffers differently, The Times is trying to maintain the digital section as an entirely different business that is subject to different pay rates.
