BBC Global News and Channel M suffer restructuring, cutbacks

Despite promising growth forecasts made by many in the industry, staffing cuts at news organizations big and small indicate that the news media industry is not yet out of the woods.

Today, Journalism.co.uk reported that BBC's Global News division is undergoing restructuring that will result in the elimination of a number of management positions. And smaller but still significant Channel M, the Manchester regional TV station owned by Guardian Media Group (GMG), will be losing 29 positions--a reduction of 88 percent.

The BBC will be losing a laundry list of high-level positions, including the directorial positions of BBC World News, BBC World Service and BBC World Service English.

Jobs to go at Swedish daily

Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter has announced that it will cut between 100 and 120 jobs after sustaining multi-million euro losses, The Local reports. This amounts to almost one sixth of the newspaper's workforce.

The company employs 580 people, with half of these in the newsroom. Most of the cuts are expected to affect editorial staff, with more than a third of these set to go.

The newspaper reported losses of 97 million kronor, or around €10 million, last year. Despite this, union official Hans Arbman said that the cuts were unexpected.

Gannett sees profits and circulation increase in 4Q

In a time where newspapers seem to be losing more and more revenue, figures from Gannett Co. Inc.'s fourth quarter released today, showed potential positive results for the months ahead.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Gannett swung to a profit in the fourth quarter following $5.6 billion in prior-year write-downs. Lower declines in advertising sales combined with much lower expenses helped the newspaper publisher show improvement.

Tom Boswell's usually revered sports column fuelled a not insignificant number of outcries from WaPo's most fastidious readers back in November, when it graced the publication's website littered with errors and typos. At the time the Post's ombudsman, Andrew Alexander, explained such occurrences as an undesirable side effect of tighter deadlines and fewer copy editors, after recent jobs cuts and a total of four buyouts since 2003.

But despite complaints from agitated readers, Boswell's typo strewn offering has been by no means an isolated case, and eagle eyed grammarians have been quick to point other errors as and when. Many ask pertinent questions, such as Phillip K. Cohen: "If they don't care about basics like grammar and spelling, how much do they care about factual accuracy?"

Toronto Star reduces job cuts

The Toronto Star has cancelled plans to outsource editing jobs, in a move that will substantially reduce the number of job cuts planned.

The newspaper announced in November that it was outsourcing all copy-editing and cutting 78 editing jobs, eight of which were part-time and the rest full-time. This constitutes one fifth of its total editorial staff of 390. Revenue at the paper's parent company, Torstar, had fallen 13% in the last quarter and the cuts were expected to save around $4 million a year.

The union and the paper have reached a deal to keep editing duties as part of the internal operations, saving around 35 jobs. The rest will still be cut, though, through layoffs and voluntary redundancies. Design and layout of the paper's ads will still be outsourced.

Switzerland: Significant jobs cuts at Blick newspaper

29 full time positions at Blick newspaper, one of Switzerland
's best selling dailies, have been cut as a direct result of an all new integrated newsroom at the company, Handelszeitung reports.

The majority of cuts touched the Production, Layout, Graphics and Proof Reading departments. Fewer cuts were made to purely journalistic positions. According to a Spokesperson for Ringier Media group, production positions had to be reduced by 28 percent of full time staff and layout by 11 percent.

There is no denying that 2009 was an eventful year for both the staff at WaPo and its readers, and one that saw the newspaper lose tens of millions of dollars. In an attempt to counter this the publication implemented a number of significant changes to its newsroom operation, cut a fair few jobs, and underwent a complete redesign - receiving a lot of criticism and a little praise.

Yet the 132-year-old paper weathered the storm and looks set to bring about a number changes this year, too, which will mainly affect the look of things online.

A half-dozen young men and a few women dressed in long Muslim outfits are sitting in an open space, repeating a few words in English. The instructor, a lady wearing a distinctive veil, sends one of her students to the board, and he starts writing a few words that his "schoolmates" have to repeat. We are in Hyderabad, India. Their native language is Urdu, a mix of Hindi with Arabic script, spoken by many Indian Muslims and widespread in Pakistan.

On the same floor, there is an insurance service office. On the opposite side, a TV studio with good, minimal equipment, with a large blue sheet on one of the back walls. The two rooms next door host a radio studio, for a station launched only a few days before, after months of waiting for the license. This is not a school of journalism, nor a social club, but The Siasat Daily's building, based in India's fifth-largest metropolis.

Survey finds crisis has eroded independence for Spanish journalists

The economic crisis is eroding the independence of Spanish journalists, reports Periodismo Digital, with some 57.5 per cent of directors in national media positions claiming they have less freedom now than in previous years.

Results from a survey carried out by the Press Association of Madrid (APM) as part of its Annual Report 2009 found that directors in Spanish print, radio and television media believed that they now have to play more favourably to the interests of advertisers and institutions as a direct consequence of the financial strain the industry is currently experiencing following the recession.

A recent post on Alan Mutter's Reflections of a Newsosaur blog has rasied concerns over the potentially devasting impact the current financial crisis in the newspaper industry could have on the willingness of students to choose journalism as a profession.

Mutter argues that in a time where employment opportunities are shrinking and those who do manage to secure jobs are paid a pittance, a 'substantial percentage of the next generation of professional journalists' could be wiped out in a movement he dubs 'journicide'.

Eyebrows raised over gender diversity as three female editors resign

Concerns have been raised over the level of gender diversity with the number of women in top newspaper positions dropping. The last week has seen three female newspaper editors resign from their positions 'indicating they are not likely to run a newsroom again,' reports Editor & Publisher.

Karin Winner, announced her retirement after 15 years as editor of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Sixty-four years of age, the decision is not a surprising one- though many are waiting to see who will be named her replacement.

Two American editors step down

Two American editors-in-chief have announced that they will be stepping down from their current positions. Sandra Mims Rowe, editor of The Oregonian since 1993, will be retiring from her post at the end of the year; Janet Coats, executive editor of the Tampa Tribune, will be finished on 18 December.

Rowe reportedly made her decision to retire over the Thanksgiving holiday in an altruistic attempt to spare other employees' jobs. In an email obtained by Portland-based Willamette Weekly, Rowe stated, "It became clear we would have to shed about 70 jobs total from the newsroom staff. As we have gotten much smaller as a newsroom, it is also clear we have too many editing positions concentrated at the top of the organization. Over Thanksgiving I wrestled with the number of layoffs we would need and determined it was best to start by removing my own salary from the budget. I informed [publisher N. Christian Anderson III] of my decision last week. Doing this preserves other jobs."

USA Today announces job cuts

USA Today will cut 26 newsroom jobs, reducing its newsroom staff by 5%, under cutbacks announced by newspaper publisher Gannett Co. yesterday.

USA Weekend magazine, a weekly insert in other newspapers, will also lose 11 positions. Its remaining staff will be combined with that of USA Today.

Non-union workers at other Gannett newspapers will be required to take more unpaid furloughs, or leave of absence. Employees in Gannett's community publishing division will be affected.

The Star Tribune announced it would cut another 100 jobs yesterday, as the Minnesota paper attempts to reduce costs in its struggle to stay above board, only recently emerging from bankrupcy protection.

Editor Nancy Barnes said in a memo to staff that about 30 of the cuts will come from newsroom and editorial departments. The layoffs are expected to reduce the Tribune's newsroom by nine per cent, and Barnes said they would take place across a two month period.

New York Times reports Q3 loss; beats forecast, shares rise, circulation outweighs ad revenue

The New York Times beat quarterly forecasts by reporting a third quarter loss of $35.6 million yesterday. This mixed news is the result of deep continuing cost cutting, and the better than expected results sent the company's shares up 22.5%, a $1.97 gain and the stock's highest close in 12 months; but there was still a net loss of 25 cents a share.

This comes just a few days after the Times announced a cut of 100 jobs in its newsroom, and it expects to raise expense cuts to $475 million. The company cut costs 22.4 percent, to $525.1 million. It lowered outstanding debt by $140 million since the start of the year.

Advertising revenue still continues to fall at the company and across the print industry, but the general feeling is that the market is bottoming out, or at least the decline is slowing.

Trinity Mirror rings in the changes

In less than one months time, the daily edition of the Birmingham Post will be a thing of the past, with its weekly edition set to roll off the printers every Thursday from 12 November, the Guardian has reported.

Last year the business paper underwent a revamp, switching from a broadsheet format to a tabloid, and moving with the Birmingham Mail and about 40 other Trinity Mirror daily and weekly titles into a brand new multimedia newsroom.

Yet this did little to help Trinity Mirror crawl out of its £388m debt, which has since caused the company to cut 1,200 jobs, close 27 newspapers, and sell four titles.

New York Times to cut 100 newsroom jobs by end of year

The New York Times is planning to cut 100 newsroom positions by the end of the year, it was reported yesterday. Voluntary buyouts will be offered to all on Thursday and if enough people do not take them the paper will start lay-offs.

Times writer Richard Perez-Pena wrote that the 5% pay cut instigated earlier this year was intended to forestall staff reductions, but that "hopes for a year-end turnaround in the newspaper business have faded." Another round of budget cuts will be implemented on the editorial, op-ed and business sides, executive editor Bill Keller wrote in a letter to newsroom employees, published on BNOnews.com.

Despite Star-Ledger woes, editor optimistic

Last year the Star-Ledger was threatened by closure if it did not make cuts the Newhouse owners deemed appropriate. Now, after a 40% newsroom reduction, publisher George Arwady is seeking to cut another 50 jobs due to the worsened financial situation at the paper.

While closure is no longer on the table, the Ledger is still loosing money. "We're not the paper we were and we're not the paper we want to be," says Kevin Whitmer, new editor at the Ledger. However he reports that more people are looking at their content than at any time in their history when online and video and included in viewing statistics.

The problem is that this does not translate into revenue. Even with wider public exposure, there seems to be in New Jersey a mounting sense of newspaper irrelevance due to smaller staff and less stories. Brendan Byrne, former NJ governor, states his disillusionment flatly: "You don't expect that the Star-Ledger is going to have the kind of news it used to have."

Despite the cuts there remains demand in Jersey for print space, where whistle-blowing and journalistic watchdog services are needed. "Politicians will fight for the tiny piece of ink that is available," says Richard Codey, State Senate president. This raises concerns about corruption and unfair endorsements, something more papers are choosing to avoid but are hard-pressed to combat given staff reductions.

Gannett to axe between 1,000 and 2,000 jobs

The American newspaper publisher Gannett plans to get rid of somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 positions, according to an article in today's Wall Street Journal. The job cuts will hit the company's 80 local dailies, rather than USA Today.

Former Gannett editor and reporter Jim Hopkins had previously predicted up to 4,500 slashed jobs on his Gannett Blog. He now says there will likely be 600 actual layoffs as a result of the restructuring, naming July 8 as the axe date.

Newspapers can avoid the music industry's llegal filesharing woes

A lobbying campaign in the UK has called for the government to up the penalties for online filesharing, a practice in which over 7million UK residents regularly partake. The campaign, echoing that of the French government, takes an economical outlook, claiming that illegal filesharing is costing thousands of jobs in the UK and is denting the Kingdom's already slumping GDP. Is this a similar phenomenon to that which is causing UK and Western newspapers to shed staff at an unprecedented rate? Can newspapers, whose bottom line many consider to be suffering from digital content, learn from the plight of the music and entertainment industries affected by filesharing?

Yes and no.

Balitmore Sun claims staff cuts will help it succeed

The Baltimore Sun reports today that it has cut nearly a third of its newsroom staff as the company reorganizes. Newspapers all over the US have been making cutbacks, and while staff cuts are old news, what is different about the Sun is that it claims its cuts will not only help it survive the economic crisis but succeed in it.

Job cuts occurred in nearly every area of the Sun's newsroom, according to the Newspaper Guild, including top editors, news photographers, critics, columnists, sports reporters, copy editors, page designers, and graphic artists. A spokeswoman says 61 staffers were laid off. The Sun says the layoffs are part of an effort to restructure its newsroom.

About 40 former members of the Star-Leger staff who took buyouts last fall, joined together to launch newjerseynewsroom.com. "We had started talking about doing this even before the buyouts were made," said Matt Romanoski, former deputy sports editor at the New Jersey daily.

It has been two weeks since the website launched and it receives 10,000 page view per week. The only advertising so far is from Google. Newjerseynewsroom.com focuses on news that pertains to the state of New Jersey and any other news that may interest its residents. There are also links to other news sources, which include the Star-Ledger itself.

New York Times redesigns to lower costs

Following announcements of salary cuts and dropping their 'City' section, the New York Times now has plans underway to eliminate and combine several weekly sections.

Along with turning the guide to each day's paper into a single page, Bill Keller, the executive editor, said on Thursday that as of May 1, they will be dropping the Friday 'Escapes' section and the Sunday regional section. "Taken together, these moves will save millions of dollars - savings that would otherwise have to come out of payroll," he wrote.
