Enough of ‘content’

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on October 31, 2007 at 9:53 AM
Just a thought about content, as MarketWatch’s David Callaway vents against the trite notion of ‘content is king’. News can’t be contained, especially online, he says.

“Content isn't king. News is king,” writes Callaway.

Moreover, he calls content a horrible word “snagged from the bowels of the dictionary by the same Internet marketing folks who gave you "B2B," "hard stop" and "digital solutions."

Not that Callaway hopes to change the world by sparking this news versus content debate. But maybe it’s food for thought?

For an example of integrated hyperlocal publishing in the UK, take a look at www.gazettelive.co.uk, the web site of the Evening Gazette, in Teesside. GazetteLive has 15 associated hyperlocal sites, all launched this year and each one covering a single postcode area. There will be 23 - one for every postcode in the Gazette's footprint - very soon. Several have spawned weekly, reverse-published print publications, which are home-delivered to the relevant area. Some of the hyperlocal content is generated in the newsroom but most is produced in the community, by village correspondents, schools and community groups. The Gazette site was named Web Site of the Year in this month's UK Regional Press Awards, principally for its pioneering work in the hyperlocal space. A redesign of the main site is due in the next 2-3 months, featuring enhanced interactivity and a further significant drive into user-generated content.
