As trivial as ranking films, magazines, or albums may seem, newspapers in need of content during the long days of summer might profit from list-making. As CBS Sportsline demonstrated with its “Top 50 Sports Jerks of All Times,” lists can be made relevant to a publication’s main theme or editorial personality. Finally, as Felling points out in his article, lists make good topics of conversation, and sparking reader interest and discussion is always an editorial goal, at any time of year.
