Recently, The Financial Times and other internationally well-known papers such The Guardian, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Spanish newspaper El Pais, and Germany’s Mitteldeutsche Zeitung displayed digital full-color samples produced by Océ at Poing, near Munich, Germany, Europe’s largest annual digital printing exhibition.
“Producing newspapers in colour is another quantum leap forward and, quite frankly the quality from Océ’s is better than offset,” said Ian Denhard, FT’s head of logistics of the full-color samples.
With six separate commercial print sites, Océ produces more than 5,000 international editions for 15 journals around the world on a daily basis. Its new printing technology, including the VarioStream 9000, allows for a 50% increase in printing speed. In addition, 26 print sites in Germany allow Océ to produce 20,000 copies of Handelsblatt News Am Abend per day. With a 2pm editorial deadline, special news copies are available by 3:30pm for Air Berlin flights and Deutsche Bahn trains.
“Printing in full colour is another massive leap forward for this unique way of producing international editons of some world-famous titles across the world,” said Michaela Frisch, international market segment manager for the newspaper industry. Naming other advancements such as faster black and white printing machines, she added, “We still have only seen the beginning of what digital print can do for newspapers.”
