Germany: Bild moves to Berlin

Axel Springer’s top-selling tabloid, Bild, is moving its production operations – and some 700 staffers – from Hamburg to Berlin. Some consider this to be a ‘revolution,’ as Hamburg remains the German capital for the press.

 
Bild sells about 3.44 million copies a day, and claims to have 11.5 million readers.

“We are convinced that on the long term, we can’t keep an important national medium like Bild outside of the center of national politics,” said Bild’s new editor-in-chief, Kai Diekmann, at the beginning of May.

About 700 staffers, many of them journalists, will be moving to Axel Springer’s headquarters in Berlin, next to the Die Welt newsroom.

Following World War II, many media left Berlin, and Hamburg became known as the capital of the German press. Bild’s decision to move back to the political capital might spark a trend, although Hamburg continues to boast 17,000 media-related companies.
