Who’s the top media for 2006?

According to Ashkan Karbasfrooshan, author, analyst, founder and CEO of Mojo Supreme, this year’s final media showdown – in terms of financial success – opposed Walt Disney to News Corp. The runner-ups included CBS, Viacom and Time Warner.
Disney and News Corp both saw their shares’ value increase by 30% this year. Disney registered an 89% increase in its fourth quarter earnings (at the end of September) compared to the year before.
“Disney had a spectacular year, posting record revenues, record net income, and record cash flow,” said Bob Iger, president and chief executive officer of the Walt Disney Company.
News Corp.’s performance was also impressive, notably through its risky $1.2 billion bid on IGN and MySpace. Operating income rose 9%, up to $3.9 billion, and its broadcast and cable television networks registered strong growth. On the other hand, News Corp.’s book unit and film and TV businesses suffered sharp declines, especially in the last quarter.
In the end, Karbasfrooshan gave the preference to Disney, because News Corp. “was more buzz and flash (thanks to MySpace), its film business did well but it did suffer a few intangible black eyes with the OJ Simpson brouhaha,” he said.
