The British take on the American public v. private debate
Because many of the papers with interested buyers don’t seem to be turning the highest profit possible, the industry seems to be looking for a new ownership model which could potential be local ownership. Looking at the most recent trend of newspaper owners, big publishing companies, it looks like the papers haven’t developed but only profits have been drained out of the publications.
This leads to the idea that private may be the answer, but some wonder what if private owners follow the same profit sucking model as the big companies? The Times compares the potential buyers of America’s newspapers to “a newsroom’s worst nightmare,” Orson Welles fictional character Citizen Kane.
Though these future owners may have a desire to turn the papers more community focused, they are still businessmen.
