Spain: El Pais relaunches webpage, changes design and content

The world's most-circulated Spanish-language publication, El Pais , has introduced a new, redesigned website, changing its name from elpais.es to elpais.com (readers are still able to access the site through the .es address). The site has also been refocused on several "pillars", the two principal ones being video and citizen participation.

Originally, El Pais fell behind its native competitor El Mundo on the Web because it placed all of its content behind a paywall. But its growing online readership is beginning to encroach on El Mundo's dominance. El Pais has included innovations such as distributing news for Playstation Portable and creating a constantly updated, downloadable and printable offering entitled 24 Horas.

New features include:

REDESIGN:

  • The page has been expanded to 1,204 pixels which spans the width of the modern computer screen
  • The navigation bar has been placed horizontally at the top of the page

CONTENT:

  • Readers are now able to leave comments on certain articles and can vote on the quality of an article through a five-star system
  • Each article will be accompanied by suggestions for related material
  • The section Yo Periodista allows readers to publish photos, stories and reflections on the latest news
  • New blogs have been added and the number and quality of videos has been increased
