World's Press Condemns Murder of Russian Journalist

Ms Politkovskaya, a reporter for the Novaya Gazeta newspaper, was found dead Saturday afternoon from a bullet wound in the elevator of the building where she lived in Moscow. "This is tragic and deeply shocking news", said Timothy Balding, CEO of WAN. "We condemn this as an outrageous attack not only on a journalist but on freedom of the press and democracy in Russia. We call on the Russian authorities to pursue mercilessly the killer or killers and those behind this cowardly act".
Mr Balding added: "There had been many skeptics in Russia, including other journalists, when Ms Politkovskaya said she was the victim of attempted poisoning by security forces on her way to cover the Beslan massacre two years ago. This assassination is terrible confirmation, if any were needed, that she was not inventing her claims that she was constantly under physical threat".
Ms Politkovskaya was celebrated internationally for her critical coverage of the war in Chechnya.
She was the 76th journalists killed world-wide in 2006, the most deadly year since WAN began keeping records of journalist murders in 1997.
According to BBC, Deputy Prosecutor Vyacheslav Rosinsky said that one theory was that the killing had been "linked to the victim's social or professional duties".
Her own newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, suggests on its front page that she was killed for her reporting on Chechnya.
Ms Politkovskaya often wrote about human rights abuses in Chechnya and her last published article in Novaya Gazeta attacked pro-Moscow militia there.
A new article about torture was in the pipeline, according to deputy editor Vitaly Yaroshevsky. "We were expecting material for Monday's issue," he said on Russian TV. "She said she would do it and was meant to write this, and perhaps already had. It was about torture in Chechnya."
Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev described her killing as a savage crime, and a blow to the independent democratic press in Russia.

Unfortunately for the worst reasons, Ms Politkovskaya's death will bring more visibility than ever to human rights abuses in Chechnya.
Yet another courageous journalist gunned down in Moscow -- gradually all independent reporting is being extinguished in Putin's state. The TV stations and leading newspapers are taken over by the government or neutered by its commercial allies. Those brave journalists who refuse to be silenced and keep reporting on subjects like atrocities in Checjhnya are simply murderd.
Whatever crocodile tears are shed in public, behind the walls of the Kremlin they will have been celebrating her death.
It is a despairing moment for journalists everywhere.
