UK: Armani’s got nothing on Bono

Posted by Rory Satran on September 29, 2006 at 1:20 PM

Fashion designer Giorgio Armani’s cover for the Independent failed to achieve the success of Bono’s May edition.  Armani designed the September 21 issue in support of Bono’s charity Project Red.  Despite a cover featuring Kate Moss covered in black paint, the issue caused a spike in circulation of only 10-15,000 above average.

The Armani Independent sold 9,000 copies less than the previous Thursday’s Independent, which offered a human body wall poster.

Armani’s redesign of the paper was part of the Project Red initiative founded by rock star Bono and philanthropist Bobby Shriver.  Project Red supports women and children with AIDS in Africa through company contributions.  Motorola has created a red phone and American Express has launched a red credit card.  Proceeds from both will support the cause.

Half of the proceeds from Armani’s Independent will go to Project Red.

The profit will be significantly less than Bono’s May issue, which resulted in a rise of 70,000 papers.  Independent editor Simon Kelner said that the rise was unprecedented outside of 9/11 in his 8 years at the paper.

I can understand the success of RED after seeing Bono and listening to him describe the program on the Oprah Winfrey show. That presentation was so powerful that it motivated me to write and record this song:
