Discouraging statistics for French press
French daily Le Monde recently reacted to The Economist last August issue cover “Who killed the newspaper” with its own country’s bad news. The circulation of daily newspapers in France has fallen by 17,8% in ten years, 1,98% in 2005 alone.
The total turnover of French press dropped 875 million euros since 1990, and newspapers such as Le Matin de Paris and Le Quotidien de Paris stopped publication.
Advertisement revenues decreased by 45% in five years.
According to Le Monde one of the reasons for this situation is the bad distribution system, which convinced the press union of the necessity to have newspapers be available to the public in shops such as bakeries. The impression costs in France stay high notwithstanding the financial aids and the tax exemptions that the country granted to the press industry. Le Monde lists among the few profitable newspapers Les Echos, La Croix and L’Equipe.
