Czech Republic: launch of new daily and magazine in less than a week
Prazsky deník, the Czech Republic latest newspaper, was launched on Monday September 18 by Czech publisher Vltava-Labe-Press (VLP). The daily has an initial print run of 100.000 copies and its staff counts 90 people, including editor-in-chief Matej Husek, formerly working at the competitor Pràvo.
Chairman of VLP’s board of directors Zoltan Morvai recently declared that Czech market has a lot of space left for new publications, given that 150 copies of dailies are sold per 1000 inhabitants, roughly half the figure of Western countries.
VLP’s daughter company Astrosat is to launch next week the women’s magazine Glanc, with an initial print run is of 220.000 copies. It will appear twice a month and feature lifestyle and society articles for a targeted public of women aged between 24 and 49 years. Glanc’s editor-in-chief is TV moderator Halina Pawlowská.
The female-oriented media market is experiencing a particularly stiff competition in the Czech Republic lately, with new titles being launched frequently. Playboy’s publisher Axel Springer Praha introduced the quarterly women’s magazine Láska & Vztahy in the market in April, and plans to launch another in 2007.
Owned by German publishing house Verlagsgruppe Passau, VLP publishes on the Czech soil 72 regional dailies, nine weeklies and the nationwide tabloid daily Síp. The publisher’s profit dropped 10 million korunies (€351,000) last year, to 47 million (€1.600.000).
