France: state of French press readership

French paper Le Monde is still the number one national general daily newspaper in France, according to the French audit bureau of circulation. Although Le Monde remains number one in circulation for national news, free papers like 20 Minutes and Metro are right at it’s heels with both national and local news. Free papers like 20 Minutes in Spain have already taken over half the whole market.

In France, the daily sports paper l’Equipe is number one in circulation, ahead of newspapers like Le Figaro and Le Monde.

Circulation for newspapers like Le Monde are declining. In 2005, national daily paper sales decreased by 1.95 percent and regional papers decreased by 1.49 percent. Although it seems like a small decrease in daily circulation, Le Monde experienced a decrease of 3 percent from 371,803 copies in 2004 to 360,610 last year.

After updating its layout last November, Le Monde has been seeing increased success in sales. The more modern look of Le Monde includes the use of a large color photograph on the front page and larger columns. Le Monde also attempted to increase their audience by appealing to 30 to 40 year olds.
