Staff at the UK's Independent and Independent on Sunday are to hold a vote on whether or not to proceed to strike action after management refused to increase an 2.5% annual pay offer. The vote will take place at a National Union of Journalists chapel meeting today.
The Guardian reports that the mood amongst journalists at the paper is favourable to strike action. The staff at the two papers had given management a week to improve on the offer of a 2.5% increase. Kate Simon, Independent on Sunday travel editor and NUJ representative, made the following statement: "There was a lack of willingness to show any improvement on the offer and we had a straw poll at the meeting which overwhelmingly suggested a willingness to walk out."
