US: Newspaper website traffic soars

Editor & Publisher reports that the latest statistics from Nielsen/NetRatings and the Newspaper Association of America show that more people are visiting newspaper websites than ever before. In November, 55 million people browsed a newspaper's digital edition, 30% more than the previous year.

This number means that 36% of all Internet users clicked on a newspaper website in November.

Said NAA senior vice president and chief marketing officer, John Kimball, "Newspaper web site usage jumped during the third quarter of 2005, coinciding with national interests in news from the south's hurricane stricken coast. With the fourth quarter suprpassing that number of visitors, it's clear that online newspapers are becoming a staple for readers that rely on the Web for information."
