Saudi Arabia: imminent launch of new Arabic language daily targeting youth

A new Arabic language full colour tabloid targeting youth is to be launched in Saudi Arabia before the end of the year. The tabloid is to be called Sun; the three letters in Arabic stand for youth variety and Saudi. The initial print run will be 120 000 copies. Sun will offer a "fresh approach to news, sport, music and technology."

The new paper is being launched by a Saudi investor in partnership with the Al Wataniya media an advertising group.

The choice to target a young audience was made because the group launching the new paper believes the 60% of the Saudi population under the age of 30 is not catered for by the news media. Targeting youth is also lucrative for advertising revenue as young people represent a "big base of consumption" asserts Elie Wakim, commercial director of the new initiative.
