US: Spanish language paper Hoy to switch to free distribution

Spanish language newspaper Hoy, sister paper to NY Newsday owned by Tribune Co., is to convert to free distribution in New York in 2006. The paper is already distributed free in Chicago and Los Angeles.

Hoy simultaneously plans a regional distribution expansion in areas of New York City, New Jersey and Long Island in an attempt to boost its national circulation to over 185 000 copies per day.

Hoy was once the subject of an inflated circulation scandal; the paper claimed a circulation figure twice the real figure.
