The Pulitzer Prize Board has announced that it will now accept online journalism for prize consideration. The board began judging online journalism for the Public Service category in 1999, but now all 14 categories of the prize will be open to news reported on the Web.
"It's a very significant change," said Sig Gissler, administrator of the Pulitzers. "This reflects the growing importance of online content, but, at the same time, print remains very important, and I think the Pulitzer competition now reflects a blend of print and online, which is what most newspapers are seeking to achieve these days."
Judges will accept submissions for written articles and still photos that have been published in both the print and online editions as well as breaking news and photography that is published solely online.
Gissler did not say whether or not the Pulitzer Board would one day create a category purely for online journalism.
