US: NY Newsday announces job cuts

New York's Newsday has announced that 72 employees from across the paper will be let go and a further 40 currently unfilled jobs will be eliminated.

Publisher Timothy Knight wrote the following in a memo to Newsday's employees: "Today's changes are unfortunate but necessary to position Newsday to pursue opportunities with confidence." He also asserted that this latest job cut has not affected any "news gathering personnel"; 59 newsroom staff members departed Newsday a month ago.

The NY Newsday job cut follows a trend that has affected newspapers across the US, with approximately 2000 newspaper jobs lost in 2005. (see previous posting)
