Pedro J. Ramirez, editor-in-chief of the Spanish daily El Mundo, has received the 2006 Montaigne Award from the Hamburg based Foundation Alfred Toepfer. Mr. Ramirez was granted the prize "for his work as founder and combative director" of El Mundo and for his strong opinions "in an era when Spain is struggling against philosophical, political and intellectual nihilism."

The award was first granted in 1968 in order to "honor cultural works of exceptional character in European countries of Latin heritage."
