Germany: Newspaper starts writing books

Posted by Anna-Maria Mende on November 29, 2005 at 4:04 PM

The German daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, which is already very successful in selling collections of books, CDs and DVDs under its brand (see former posting), launched a new project: Last week it started publishing a series of books dealing with the history of the Football World Cup. The new series is called WM Bibliothek (= World Cup Library).  Each volume will deal with a Football World Cup from 1954 to 2006, the first volume covers the Cups between 1930 and 1950.

The difference to former book series is that the editorial staff of the Süddeutsche Zeitung is this time not only choosing titles for the series but also writing itself. Besides famous guest authors like Gerhard Schröder or Rudi Völler, sport journalists of the paper will write the 15 volumes. The first volumes are for sale now, the last volume will be published shortly after the final match in next year's World Cup.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung is not only successful in selling books, CDs etc, but also newspaper sales are in a good shape. Selling an average of 445.959 copies a day in October 2005, the paper reached its highest circulation ever.

this story is far from dead, and soon people will be able to form their own opinion by seeing the evidence themselves.
