News maps certainly add an interesting visual component to a story, which is why more media organizations are jumping on board.

Poynter blogger Amy Gahran highlighted a few of the best designed maps:

-AP News and Google Maps: although it's simple, Gahran says it's effective because it updates automatically

-American Disapora: Displayed on ePodunk.com (see photo), a site providing town-specific statistics, the map uses "radical lines" to illustrate post-Hurricane Katrina migration

Other maps, such as the Flickr searchable photo map, have been designed with more advanced technology, such as Adobe AIR, Flash, and widgets.

Though it is not mentioned by Gahran, The Times recently got in on the news map action, incorporating its first-ever Google map to accompany a story on Brit's financial habits.

From time to time here at the Editors Weblog, we like to give you an idea of how journalism on the medium most affecting newspapers is shaping up and how it is going to look down the road. Here's the latest in what's going on in Internet journalism:

Newspapers are still popular among residents in areas hit by Hurricane Katrina last August. In Mississippi, both The Sun Herald The Times-Picayune remain “all Katrina, all the time,” said the New York Times.

The Sun Herald of Biloxi, Mississipi, a coastal town devastated by Hurricane Katrina, has published an editorial criticising the lack of media coverage of the effects of the disaster on the area, stating its plight has fallen "into a black hole of media obscurity."

An interesting article by Michael Massing debating whether US journalists are failing in their responsibility to produce hard nosed reporting and uncover the truth for their readers.

The New Orleans paper The Times-Picayune last Sunday published a scathing editorial entitled 'Its Time for A Nation to Return The Favour'. The article directly attacks the federal government for its failure to react effectively to the destrution caused by hurricane Katrina.

In these days, it is difficult to be a French journalist when you have to talk about the Paris suburb riots. Either you are accused of self-censorship and political correctness, or of damaging France's image by excessive coverage!

The first answer is to point out that some of the most well-known French columnists and journalists have reaped as they sowed: during the London attacks and the Katrina hurricane, they gave a lot of lessons, saying that such catastrophies couldn't happen in France.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Rita much has been written about the quality of media covering these events. David Carr argues in The New York Times that the hurricane story is "a story better told in print". He states, "By their disposition, hurricanes are a television story: great pictures, an informational crawl at the bottom, and a wind-swept, rain-soaked anchor. But big papers ... all dug in, sending dispatches out of New Orleans that shed light where there had been only heat. What exactly happened at the convention center? Is Mayor Ray Nagin a saint or a kook? Were the levees overtopped or undermined? Will New Orleans be a real city again, or just Disneyland with Jell-O shots? Those are not questions that get asked or answered much on television. The New Orleans story needed the big muscles of print journalism to gain custody of facts that seemed beyond comprehension."

Journalist Bridget O'Brian, who worked at the paper from 1981 to 1988 said on Editor & Publisher: "I think it's great because there are so many in need [following the hurricane] that you have to sometimes carve out your community and do what you can for them ... It was my first newspaper job and I spent a lot of happy years there; it holds a very special place in our hearts."

The paper publishes on NOLA.com, a New Orleans local website that was launched in 1998 in affiliation with The Times-Picayune.

The paper has set up a list of missing persons, where people can post information about people missing in New Orleans due to the hurricane or search for persons. This list had already nearly 5000 entries searching for somebody on Thursday morning 10:30 am local time. In the paper's Hurricane Center people can submit their hurricane stories. There is also a category for people offering help and services and evacuee information.

However, many victims which would need such services might not have access to an internet connection at the moment, states E-Media Tidbits from Poynter Online. Moreover, almost 70% of New Orleans' population are Afro-Americans and a large majority of them with very low revenues which means that they have only little access to the internet anyway.
