AOL wants to hire a new advertising agency to promote consumers perceptions of its brand and remind them "why people should care about AOL again". AdAge writes that AOL is hoping to select an agency at the beginning of next month.

Poynter reports that Steve Buttry, director of community engagement at the Journal Register Company and Matt DeRienzo, group editor of the JRC's Connecticut papers, have set a quiz for staff to check that they properly understand the ethics of linking and attribution. Employees who got any of the answers wrong will have to take part in a training session about plagiarism.

Broadcasting & Cable writes that, for the first time, NBC intends to launch a documentary series on an iPad app . The series, Hidden Planet, will at first be made exclusively available on the app, and will then be released on RockCenterNBC.com a week later.

GigaOm argues that giving away content on the web for free was not news organisations' version of original sin.

French journalists were detained by military in Jos, Nigeria, and then kicked out of the state, the Associated Press reported.

"La Tribune bids you farewell" said the paper's frontpage on January 30, the day of the last printed edition of the French newspaper La Tribune, which will now be entirely digital. Benoît Raphaël on Le Social NewsRoom reflected on what this closure means.

According to Paid Content, the state-owned Chinese telecommunications company China Telecom will start selling the iPhone4S by the end of this month or the beginning of the next. This is the first time that the company will offer an Apple smartphone.

The Trinity Mirror has proposed 75 more editorial redundancies at the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People. Press Gazette reports that the company is creating a "centralized reporting and production hub" for reporters across all three papers, but also promises to maintain "bespoke editorial teams" for each title.

The Washington Post is encouraging its own journalists to get more involved in the comment threads on its website. Comments from Post staffers are marked out by "WP staff" insignia, and their involvement may do something to soften the tone of discussion, writes Nieman Lab.

Britain's Royal Statistical Society has launched Getstats, a campaign to promote the proper teaching of numeracy and statistics in journalism schools. Journalism.co.uk writes that former journalist David Walker, who is heading the initiative, has proposed 12 points about statistics that all journalists should be taught.

Huffington Post, à la française

Le Huffington Post, a French edition of AOL's popular news, blogging and aggregation site, The Huffington Post, was launched today in collaboration with Le Monde and Les Nouvelles Editions Independantes.

At a press conference held at Le Monde's headquarters in Paris this morning, Arianna Huffington, president and editor in chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, promised that the new edition would offer the HuffPo's trademark mix of original reporting, aggregation, bloggers and commentators.

However, Huffington stated that although the "architecture" of Le Huffington Post would be imported, the site would be "rooted in French culture" and that it was "absolutely essential" that the local journalists set the agenda.

The Huffington Post arrives in Europe

France, Italy, Spain: The Huffington Post is expanding to Europe. After having launched editions in the UK and Canada last year, Arianna Huffington is now taking her news, blogging and aggregation site into continental Europe and non-Anglophone markets.

As reported yesterday by the Wall Street Journal, the French edition "Le Huffington" will be launched on January 23, under the editorial direction of Anne Sinclair, a well-known TV journalist (and wife of the former head of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn.)

It was announced today (via PrimaComunicazione) that HuffPost has also signed an agreementwith Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso to land in Italy.

According to a graphic in this Sunday's New York Times (via Poynter), 7,282 reporters and editors are in the rarefied circle of the 1 percent.
Poynter's article explains - as Guardian's Roy Greenslade says too - that to be included in the graphic, at least 2% of people with these jobs have to live in households with incomes of $380,000 or more.

Le Huffington Post, the French version of Arianna Huffington's creation, has appointed Anne Sinclair, wife of the former I.M.F. director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, as its editorial director L'Express reported. The French Huffington Post will be launched on January 23.

In its latest step to better control China's wildly popular Twitter-like websites, the government's propaganda and information arm announced that China will expand real-name registration for microblog users, Reuters reported.

The Huffington Post' Twitter account got hacked on Sunday 15 January sending out a series of homophobic and racist tweets, Mediaite reported.

According to reports by Economiaweb.it, the Italian publishing group RCS - which publishes the main Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera - intends to sell the French publishing house Flammarion. A potential buyer - the article reported - could be the French publishing house Edition Gallimard.

Sarah Lacy, who left TechCrunch earlier this year, has started her own tech news site PandoDaily.com, which will feature three more of TechCrunch's former bloggers, Michael Arrington, M.G. Siegler and Paul Carr, reports All Things D.

Peter Preston of The Guardian writes that, despite the decline in the tabloid press and the revelations of the Leveson inquiry, popular papers have done much to shape British society.

Poynter reports some disagreements about the Washington Post's decision to use a 'composite' photo on the front page of Friday's paper.

The Daily became available on select Anroid devices today. News Corp's tablet app used to be iPad-only, but now it can be downloaded on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, reports Paid Content.

The New Haven Register, owned by the Journal Register Co. announced today that it will outsource its printing to Hertford, laying off 105 workers. According to publisher Tom Wiley, the move will allow the Register to start a new "open newsroom", enabling residents to participate in local journalism.

A French cameraman working for France-2 TV Television was killed in an attack in the Syrian city of Homs today, reports The Independent. A Dutch freelance journalist has also been injured.

This week's column by the Washington Post ombudsman Patrick Pexton about too much innovation going on too fast at the Post caused an uproar online. Jay Rosen on PressThink asked him to better explain what he meant.

"Is 2012 the year for India's internet?" asks the BBC News. It's estimated that as many as 121 million Indians are logged onto the internet. Even though this is a relatively small proportion of the country's 1.2 billion population, Internet use is predicted to grow and open the way for mobile, tablet and social networks diffusion.

In an interview on challenges.fr the president of French news site Médiapart Edwy Plenel talks about the success of the website after three years of its launch: more than €5m in revenue, up 66% year-on-year, net profit of €500,000 and 58,000 subscriptions which generate 95% of revenue. This success proves the effectiveness of the paid model, Plenel said.

After The New York Times raised its daily price to $2.50, Jeff Jarvis on the Huffington Post reflects on the increase wonders if, while today's Times is clearly a better product than the penny press a century ago, he wonders if it is worth 10x as much.

The Huffington Post and El Pais team up

The Huffington Post and El Pais announced this morning that they are partnering up to produce El Huffingtion Post, a local Spanish edition of the popular news-aggregation site.

The deal was closed on Thursday and was announced today by Arianna Huffington, president and editor in chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, and Juan Luis Cebrián, president of El País and CEO of Prisa, the media organisation that owns the Spanish daily.

"El Huffington Post will combine the local editorial expertise of El País, the leading Spanish newspaper and one of the most widely-respected global news dailies, with The Huffington Post's pioneering combination of original reporting, aggregation, a leading-edge commenting forum and dynamic social engagement tools," announced the press release.

What journalists need to know about new media and conflict

On Wednesday November 30, Sciences Po Paris played host to a panel discussion on the subject of new media and conflict prevention. The prestigious panel included: Anne-Sophie Bordry, public affairs director for Facebook, France; William Echikson, former journalist and spokesperson for Google in Brussels; Fabrice Epelboin, publisher of the French version of ReadWriteWeb and co-founder of the Tunisian Association for Digital Liberties; Salpi H. Ghazarian, director of the Civilitas Foundation; Lilane Landor, language controller of BBC Global News; Joseph Maïla, founder of the Institue for training in Mediation and Negotiation and Omar Saghi, Sciences Po. professor and screenwriter.

Director of Science Po's International Business School, Ghassan Salamé opened the conference by discussing the contribution that new media has made to uprisings and revolutions across the world, namely in the Arab world. The French and Bolshevic revolutions happened without social media, Ghassan noted, but since the advent of the digital age, the way conflict and civil unrest unfold has become drastically different.

Too many ads with your news?

"Web design is in bad shape. In the applications boom, news-related websites end up as collateral damage."

This is how Frédéric Filloux, general manager of the French ePresse consortium, opens his article on advertising on news websites, just published in the Guardian and Monday Note.

Filloux argues that great design has gone into news apps, but the traditional web has been left behind. "The graphic evolution of the web must deal with two negative forces: its language framework doesn't evolve fast enough, and it faces the burden of messy advertising," he writes.

Onwards and upwards for the Huffington Post?

The Huffington Post faced a few hiccups earlier this year, but now seems to have smoothed things out and is moving forward.

The first problem confronted by the popular blogging site in 2011 was the boycott from The Newspaper Guild, an organisation representing 34,000 media professionals across the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. The action was a response to the HuffPo being purchased for $315 million by AOL in February, in a deal which gave the profits to the site's founders, but not to contributors.

The Guild made a strongly worded statement when they began the boycott in March: "We feel it is unethical to expect trained and qualified professionals to contribute quality content for nothing. It is unethical to cannibalize the investment of other organizations that bear the cost of compensation and other overhead without payment for the usage of their content."

Coverage of Gaddafi's death - how to ride an information tidal wave

The exact circumstances in which the dictator died may still be unclear, but that hasn't stopped the world press from leaping in to cover the death of this infamous dictator.

Here's a brief outline on the divergent details of the story as it emerged in in the UK press yesterday: The Guardian states that Gaddafi was attempting to flee Libya in a NATO Convoy of cars when Nato jets, from French forces, attacked. Then the convoy became embroiled in a gun battle, where anti-Gaddafi fighters supposedly shot Gaddafi, seriously wounding him. So far, so good: there is little contention about these events.

Where things start to get tricky after Gaddafi moved away from the convoy. Reports then state that Gaddafi crawled away into a drain where fighters loyal to the new government of the National Transitional Council discovered him. This version of events is recognised by the BBC, their source Reuters and The Guardian.

Video footage, which has also been widely reported and re-hosted, in this case by The Telegraph, shows an injured Gaddafi being man-handled by opponents. His death has been officially confirmed by National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta, but there is still little consensus on how exactly he died.

Spanish Broadcaster at risk of government interference

The Spanish public broadcast network, RTVE, is facing the prospect of more political influence, The Guardian reports.

Recently, the Editors Weblog reported on proposed changes to the board of French newswire Agence France Presse, which could leave the company open to more interference from the state. Now it seems that RTVE is now facing the kind of interference that many feared could occur at AFP if the changes were to be passed.

RTVE already has a number of political representatives on its board; these representatives have now made a bid to use their privileged position to gain access to the network's news before it is broadcast.

France considers reforming governance and finances of Agence France-Presse

Sénateur UMP Jacques Legendre, a member of President Sarkozy's party, has proposed a law that would reorganize the board of the Agence France-Presse. What's more, the news agency might loose state funding, which currently accounts for 40% of its budget, and become open to more political influence.

Although subsidiaries of the AFP include recent and innovative start-ups such as Citizenside, the organization can trace its roots back to 1835, when it was called the Agence Havas, making it the world's first international news agency. As Le Figaro reports, the proposed reforms are an attempt to bring the APF inline with modern EU competition law, as last year the German press agency, DAPD, made an official complaint to the European Commission claiming AFP was receiving state subsides that were illegal under EU law.

Other opponents to the changes fear that the roles of new board representatives are loosely defined and the proposed structure of the board could leave the door open for political manipulation, something which article 2 the 1957 statue that outlines the mission of the AFP strictly prohibits.

An anniversary to remember

The 10-year anniversary of the September 11 2001 terrorist attack is approaching and the news landscape is preparing for it.

The Knight Center offers an overview on how US news media are planning special coverage of the anniversary, while, as AP reported (via WSJ), Al Jazeera English, which didn't exist at the time of the attacks, aims to bring an "a global perspective to the anniversary that domestic networks likely won't". Facebook, in partnership with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and social marketing platform Involver, as the Washington Post reported, launched a Web app asking people to share how they are remembering the 9/11 attacks.

Besides the impact from a political, cultural and international point of view, news media are also debating on the effect that this last decade has had on the news itself.

Le Monde states in an article published today that Interior Minister Claude Guéant has confirmed that the Division Centrale du Renseignement Intérieur (DCRI) had illegally obtained his phone records of the paper's journalist Gérard Davet from his operator, which the publication declared was "en violation des législations sur les écoutes téléphoniques et la liberté de la presse" (In violation of laws pertaining to telephone-tapping and freedom of the press.)

What is more, an advisor within the Ministry of Justice was dismissed from his post and sent to French Guyana once the government learned that he had acted as a source for one of Davet's articles.

The Guardian reports on the recent front-page editorial published by Le Monde, which states 'the tracking of journalists had become "an affair of state" which lent credence to the suspicion that a cabinet noir, or office of shady operations, existed at the highest reaches of French power, namely the Elysée.'
