Chicago Tribune offers literature fans premium paid content

The Chicago Tribune has announced that it will be offering subscribers a new Sunday books section as a piece of premium paid content.

Printers Row, as the section will be called, will cost Tribune subscribers an additional $99 a year. Those who sign up will get a 24-page book supplement every Sunday, featuring reviews, interviews with authors and news from Chicago's literary scene as well as a free book of short stories each week.

The Chicago Tribune describes the launch in its own business section as "a means to bolster revenue beyond the traditional subscription and advertising model" by offering readers with niche interests a high-quality targeted product that they will be willing to pay for. Gerould Kern, senior vice president and editor of the Chicago Tribune states that "audiences want very specialized information, and we are going to give them that".

Boston Globe introduces subscription model

Today, at 5.00AM EST, The Boston Globe officially announced the launch of its subscription service. For a fee of $3.99 a week users can have full online access to all the content of The Boston Globe.

The subscription service had received a positive reaction during the trail stage; "We've been pleased with the response to BostonGlobe.com during the free trial and are excited about entering this new phase of the initiative, where we'll be introducing new features such as comments, and our new loyalty program, Boston Globe Insiders," said Chris Mayer, the publisher of The Globe, in an official press release.

French government scheme to give free newspapers to young people enters its third season

Today, the French ministry of culture and communication launched season three of 'Mon Journal Offert' ('My Free Newspaper'), an initiative established in 2009 as part of a government bailout of the press, aimed at encouraging people between the ages of 18 and 24 to read daily newspapers in print. The scheme allows any citizen of France or one of its departments, aged between 18 and 24, the chance to claim a free daily newspaper - selected from a range of 61 titles - one day a week for a year.

Young French people have a limited period of time to take advantage of this offer - the window for subscription begins on October 5 and closes December 31, after which 220,000 young people will be able to receive a free daily newspaper. Successful applicants are selected on a first come, first served basis as demand always outstrips supply; in previous years close to 400,000 applications have been made, according to the ministry of culture's website.

Poynter's Bill Mitchell on paywalls - how to shape the paid experience

As digital media grows and print revenue shrinks, papers around the world are struggling to find ways to make online news pay. One of the most obvious - and most controversial - solutions has been the paywall. But getting people to pay for content is no easy task if they feel they can the same thing for free elsewhere.

Bill Mitchell, Head of Entrepreneurial and International Programs at the Poynter Institute, offers his expert opinion here. He talks about how "charging today for something that was free yesterday is fundamentally a non-starter". Yet paywalls can work if papers invest in flexible systems, exploit their journalists' expertise in niche areas, and, crucially, offer readers their money's worth in terms of new value.

Mitchell will be speaking at the 18th World Editors Forum in Vienna about paid online content from the perspective of the newsroom.

WAN-IFRA: News organisations have different paywall systems, from The New York Times' metered paywall to the more or less straightforward paywall of The Times of London. What's the best model?

MITCHELL: I think the so-called 'leaky' wall is the best bet as opposed to a hard wall. With an emerging business model like this, flexibility is really critical and the metered or 'leaky' wall enables flexibility across many fronts. It enables the publisher to shape the terms of the two fundamental experiences that it offers to its customers: the paid experience and the free experience.

WAN-IFRA Have paywalls changed the way journalists and newsrooms work?

MITCHELL: I think so. I was just talking with the editor of the Augusta Chronicle in Georgia, who's in the Press Plus metered paywall system. He was talking about the way in which the newsroom is focused on creating two kinds of experiences for users: the free experience and the paid experience. And by way of example he said that even when quite a bit of great news is available without charge, the experience that you have as a paid user is quite different. He described it in terms of being a more relaxing experience for the user, who's not interrupted with pop ups, and finds the material organised well along the lines of topics. I think that to create these experiences is going to require a great deal of newsroom work.

WAN-IFRA: Will the content of the news change as a result of paywalls being put up?

MITCHELL: I think that the idea of charging today for something that was free yesterday is fundamentally a non-starter, economically. The user really needs to see evidence of new value. And new value means changing the way that the content is presented and gathered and the way that publishers enable their customers to put that content to use. I think in at least those three respects there's going to be quite a bit of change.

WAN-IFRA: Do you think that niche publications will fare better with paywalls than general news sites?

MITCHELL: I think for the most part yes. A niche publication offers the user the opportunity to get content that either helps them do their job better, because it's focused on their area of employment, or really addresses a personal passion. But I think this doesn't close the door to general interest publications because most are made up of a number of niches.

WAN-IFRA: Do you think that paywalls can generate enough money to replace the decline in print revenue?

MITCHELL: No, I think that one has a pretty simple answer. As promising as the meter has been in generating additional revenue it doesn't begin to replace the revenue that a combination of traditional print subscriptions and various forms of advertising have generated in the past. But I think that revenue is going to be an important part of what will emerge as a much more diffuse hybrid revenue strategy for news organisations.

WAN-IFRA: Is there a danger that news organisations that put up paywalls will block themselves off from the rest of the web and not be able to generate fresh users?

MITCHELL: There is with the hard wall, because imagine the traffic you turn away when big news happens in your market and people searching around the world are turned away from a link from Google. Again, I think this speaks to the wisdom of the meter over the hard wall.

Publishers are finding a couple ways of doing it. The New York Times, for example, I believe enables links from search engines in a way that does not count against the metered number of articles per month. But even newspapers that do count search traffic against the meter are finding that because a typical drive-by or user is visiting only when big news happens, they don't consume enough articles over the course of the month to represent much of a barrier.

WAN-IFRA: Can you name other good models you've seen for monetising content online?

MITCHELL: I think that some of the strategies that are beginning to make up overall hybrid revenue approach include ideas about membership. In some ways, you can think of membership as an enhanced subscription relationship. A membership in a news organisation might involve things like regular events. It might involve the opportunity to host free classified ads if you're selling your piano or buying a second car.

Online advertising, while not directly tied to monetising content, is also an area where lots of things are changing. I think that, just as user-generated content is changing the way journalism gets done, user-generated advertising will reduce some of the production costs for advertising initiatives. That will open up the area of advertising to small business owners who traditionally have been priced out of the market for most publications.

Another revenue model is the social media consultancy that some news organisations are beginning to develop. Pretty much all companies with enough of a marketing budget to advertise in a newspaper -- and many that don't -- are developing social media marketing strategies. How do they most effectively use Twitter and Facebook and such locational tools as Foursquare to grow their businesses? Many companies are struggling with this challenge, experiencing the kind of pain that news organizations can help relieve with the expertise their staffs have been developing with social media. This is an opportunity both for news organizations to grow their business with exiting advertisers and to develop new relationships with clients that once considered the newspaper too expensive.

WAN-IFRA: As newspaper revenue becomes more uncertain, is it increasingly necessary for editors to be involved in business decisions?

MITCHELL: I think it is. I think this can happen in a way that serves both the journalism and the commerce as long as both the business-side and the news-side colleagues agree upon the importance of editorial independence. There's a way of creating new editorial products and services that create so much new value that they also generate revenue. But it's still important to do that in a way that the focus of the journalism is not on the revenue itself but on making the user an important person in the equation.

WAN-IFRA: Can you give an example of a news organisation that has done a good job of that so far?

MITCHELL: Here's one example: The Miami Herald was faced with needing more revenue to support its journalism. So it has created an iPhone app with content focused on the Miami Dolphins football team. The news and business side worked together to create it, and it has become something of an annuity for The Herald because people buy it every year.

It goes [back] to your question about the challenge that is faced by general interest publications. There's nothing more general interest than a metro daily newspaper, but among the niches they have is sports fans who are passionate about Miami Dolphins. They drilled down into that particular niche, and the journalists and the people on the business side were able to collaborate on creating a product that generates revenue.

WAN-IFRA: What do you think the future of online news will be?

MITCHELL: The real answer is that I don't know. But I think key characteristics will involve experimentation and at least as much failure as success. I think that changes will be as significant on the journalists' side as on the financial side because of the essential challenge of creating new value if you're going to seek new revenue. They're going to be creating new forms of journalism that are, for audiences and communities, much better than before.

The newspaper has just set up a pay-wall on one of its two websites displaying different arrays of digital content, and a web app that doesn't let Apple keep a cut of the profits.

Media state subsidies are behind the times

Are public media subsidies fair? A recent study by The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism has tallied up the amount of public money that either directly or indirectly subsidises media in the U.K., Finland, France, Germany, Italy and the US.

Unfortunately, the study discovered that strategies for funding news organisations have not changed to accommodate the developments of he digital age.

Finland gave the most public money, per capita, to support the media - around £46 a year per head via indirect subsidies, such as tax and VAT exemptions - and France gave the most in terms of direct public funding to media, through initiatives such as the 'My Free Newspaper' scheme, donating around £5 per capita. Germany was found to be the nation that invested the most in public service broadcasting.

FT digital subscriptions grow by 34%

The Pearson group released official sales figures for The Financial Times today, showing a 34% rise in digital circulation in the first six months of this year, as Journalism.com reports.

This boost in digital sales comes primarily from iPad app downloads, which have apparently drawn in 230,000 new users.

Time Magazine establishes its digital subscription model

Time Magazine released its new subscription plan today, which allows readers unilateral access to the magazine across any platform, be it digital, print, or tablet.

With the current variety of platforms to consume news, newspapers and magazines are stepping up their efforts to attract readers willing to pay for content. Some publications have separate subscription plans for digital content, while others choose to provide online news for free but charge for access through apps.

Time Magazine is the latest to join the ranks of the "all-access" publications, which allow print subscribers full online and tablet apps (for $30 a year, in Time Magazine's case). Those wishing to "taste test" the model can opt for monthly access, in which they will receive the print, full access to TIME.com, and tablet editions for $2.99 - an attractive pricetag for new customers determining where to consume news. Those who only wish to access the website for a short time are the most penalized, as the week-long pass costs $4.99.

Philadelphia papers bet on digital with subsidised tablets

In yet another development in the ongoing struggle to convince readers to pay for content, the Philadelphia Media Network has decided to sell discounted Android tablets loaded with it's two papers.

The Philadelphia Media Network will begin selling the tablets at about half the market price to new subscribers this August. According to Poynter, this digital push hopes to convert tech savvy young professionals to mobile reading. The tablets' homescreen will have direct links to digital versions of the Philadelphia papers, and the tablets come equipped with four apps - The Inquirer, The Daily News, Philly.com for breaking news and another unspecified app for interactive features. Pop up advertisements would show up on the homescreen.

Greg Osberg, CEO of Philadelphia Media, expects the venture to turn profitable in 2012.

The strategy is one of the most aggressive digital strategies yet. Convincing readers to go tablet only is a risk - according to emediavitals, only about 8% of American adults own a tablet device. The market is growing, however, and newspapers have been unrolling apps and tablet friendly websites to reach digital consumers.

Paid content: one subscription across multiple devices?

As publishers define their paid content models, they should not forget that news consumers that access the news across multiple platforms will be put off by confusing subscription models.

Yesterday, Jakob Nielson examined the Wall Street Journal's mobile app, which has dismal reviews on Apple's app store. He found that the problem did not lie with content, but the user interface design. For the first two access screens, the app does not indicate that paid-subscribers of WSJ's digital content are not charged for access.

Commenters have left angry reviews, unhappy at what they mistook for being charged again for digital content. The dissatisfied reviewers, according to Nielson, are the news industry's dream customers: those that have already paid for online access. Being charged again degrades the WSJ's brand in their eyes. The app only has two-stars in the app store, which could deter users from choosing it amongst the growing smartphone news options.

Understanding development strategies for tablets

As more newspapers and magazines roll out iPad apps, development strategies are becoming more refined. Some apps are already on their second generation, while others, who waited to see how to best adapt their content to the iPad format, are releasing apps for the first time. Generally, the software has become more standardised and consistent, but there still exists diversity in how apps and tablet-friendly websites are presented and designed.

Poynter asked three very different publishers about their iPad strategies. Budgets and diverse goals seemed to be the main differentiating factors.

News & Record, a local North Carolina paper, had a modest approach to the iPad. The paper is concentrating on its online strategy, as it plans to charge for content. In light of this, the mobile app covers limited content and serves mostly as a feed to the online articles. By redirecting readers to the website, the paper hopes to build online readership.

Spanish-language news growing in the U.S.

Last March, The American Census Bureau reported that the American Hispanic population had climbed to over 50 million, a 43% increase in the U.S. Spanish-speaking population in the last decade. In a country with a declining newspaper industry, this represents a huge opportunity for publishers and advertisers alike.

According to NPR, Spanish language media is growing in all sectors. This week's convention by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists covered these trends. The convention hosted Monica Lozano as a keynote speaker, CEO of one of the largest Spanish-language newspaper companies in the U.S, ImpreMedia. Lozano noted the growth potential for the digital news sector, remarking that 60% of all Latinos are now online.

Lozano explained the need for Spanish-language publications, underlining what makes them relevant for Hispanics. She says that there is a content divide between English and Spanish language publications. When covering Hispanics, she claimed English-language media focuses on events, like border violence, and excludes achievements, such as the growth of Hispanic businesses.

Alternative models to monetize digital content

Magazines will fare better than newspapers in the struggle to monetize digital content, according to a report released by Pricewaterhouse Coopers. The annual outlook on entertainment and media predicts that newspapers' digital subscriptions will not compensate for decreasing circulation revenues.

On Forbes.com, Jeff Bercovici breaks down the numbers. The report forecasts that initially, digital subscriptions will grow quickly. For the next five years, both magazines and newspapers will see their largest revenue gains in selling digital subscriptions. By 2015, PwC expects magazines to take in $611 million from digital editions (they took in about $4 million last year). Newspapers have a much stronger starting point, already racking in $150 million from digital subscriptions last year. However, PwC predicts their growth to reach only about $331 million in 2015, which would not cover the expected print sales decline.

With the news that digital subscriptions may not be enough to save the newspaper industry, finding alternative revenue streams seems to be the next step forward for the industry. Some interesting models already exist, and span everything from sponsorship, pay-per-use, and partnering with online deal services.

As Guardian reports 400,000 app downloads, is mobile news increasing in popularity?

As newspapers compete for online readers, mobile phones have huge potential to draw users online with their portable and real-time news updates.

The Guardian announced on Friday that it has seen more than 400,000 downloads of its mobile newspaper app since it was relaunched in January. The paper reported that it receives 10% of web traffic from its mobile website, a huge jump in growth from 2009, when just 0.6% of readers accessed the site from their mobile phones.

Similarly, in April 2011, MediaWeek reported that Mirror Online's mobile readership reached 8%, although the bulk of online visitors came from work and home computers.

Apple relaxes App Store subscription rules

The relationship between Apple and the publishing industry hasn't been the smoothest one, but the tech giant has taken steps towards publishers lately. For one, it is giving a more prominent place for newspapers and magazines in the upcoming iOS operating system, which was announced on Monday at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. IOS5 will include a feature called Newsstand, which will improve newspaper apps' exposure and present the user's newspaper app subscriptions in one location.

Yesterday, the press caught on the fact that Apple had quietly made changes to its much criticised in-app subscription guidelines. The most significant change related to app pricing. Mac Rumors was one of the first sites to report that Apple has now removed any specifications regarding pricing from the terms, allowing publishers to now set their prices freely. Previously, Apple had required that app subscriptions sold in the App Store had to be the "same price or less" with subscriptions the publisher offered outside the app.

The Guardian launched today the Guardian Comment Network, a new part of its Comment is free section. The newspaper said it would act as a curator and cross-post content on other sources as well. Currently, however, the page seems to include links to the Guardian's articles only.

News Limited revealed its plans for a so-called freemium subscription model for online content of the Australian, Journalism.co.uk reported. The company will follow the model of the Wall Street Journal and give access to some of its content for free, said Richard Freudenstein, the chief executive officer of News Digital Media and the Australian.

Denver Daily News ceased publication on Monday, reported The Denver Post. The publication was founded in 2001 and represented "the desire for free, independent journalism and media" on a local level but fell victim to the economic challenges that the entire print media industry faces today. Also Johnson Press, a regional publisher, closed three of its weekly newspaper offices, Holdthefrontpage.co.uk reported.

A new website maps out all online newspapers in the world, featuring also the possibility to have those sites translated with Google Translate.

Apple's big news from the WWDC makes waves in the digital community

On Monday 6th at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco Steve Jobs himself presented the company's latest innovations.
Amongst these are iOS 5, the new Apple mobile operating system which brings over 200 new features, iCloud, the new online storage and syncing service for music, photos, files and software, and Newsstand, a virtual bookshelf which organizes magazine and newspapers' app subscription in just one folder.

Probably the most interesting feature from a publisher's point of view is Newsstand. Through this service, iOS 5 organizes users' magazine and newspaper app subscriptions in just one location that lets readers access their favourite publications quickly and easily.

The App Store will have a new place just for newspaper and magazine subscriptions, to which users can go directly from Newsstand. In the same way, new purchases will go directly to the newsstand folder. Then, as new issues become available, Newsstand automatically updates them in the background -- complete with the latest covers.

Newspaper paywalls: When metered works, and when it doesn't

A flat paywall is not the only option for a newspaper looking to charge for its digital content. In a time when advertising revenue cannot alone carry costs of publishing, Frederic Filloux's article in the Monday Note on the "metered model" is particularly timely. In the article, Filloux puts forth an alternative to the traditional paywall model that looks increasingly attractive to cash-strapped U.S. and European newspapers.

The article cites publications on either end of the spectrum. The Times of London has the most extreme pay model: no access without a pay subscription. This is a particularly dangerous option, as it drives away viewership who can find content free elsewhere. Other newspapers put some content behind a paywall and allow general articles to be accessed for free, such as the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ has had the most success with its paywall implementation, as it has a paywall on digital content since it went online. Other papers have had more difficulty, as readers are satisfied with perusing only the free general content.

New iPad apps from SF Chronicle, Libération, Main Echo, Orange County Register

Apple's iPad has become a beacon of hope in the newspaper industry's quest to monetize content, although skeptics like Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner caution that it may take "decades" before the move becomes profitable. Nevertheless, a few papers in Europe and the US have recently issued iPad applications, hoping to use the digital medium as an opportunity for innovation.

The San Francisco Chronicle introduced its new iPad app this morning. The paper's print edition has been in decline since 2001, but its online readership has grown since the launch of SFGate, making it a major online U.S. paper. The release of the iPad application is another means to reach the paper's consumers who live outside of the Bay Area, the SF Chronicle explained on its site. The app will differentiate itself from SFgate by releasing pictures and videos exclusive to the tablet, as well as interactive links to share content on Twitter and Facebook.

Paywalls still divide opinions

2010 was the year of the paywall.
Trying to figure out how to transit newspapers' print businesses to the digital world, one of the big questions was: is charging online the way to go?

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp was one of those to lead the way in charging for online content, putting the UK Times and Sunday Times behind a paywall in July 2010.

Before the News Corp group, the German publisher Alex Springer began charging for online access with some of its newspapers.

It was actually a path already chosen by some niche publications, which provided (and still provide) specialized content, like financial and business news.
Within financial news publications, amongst the first ones to charge for content were the Wall Street Journal, which Murdoch originally pointed as a model to follow, and the Economist, which introduced between the end of 2009 and beginning 2010 a paywall for the print-edition content on its website.
It has to be noted however that financial news is an area in which subscribers might be more willing to pay for online.

How important are news apps in looking for online profitability?

Profitability and finding a sustainable economic way for newspaper in the digital world is probably if the not the main, at least one of the main challenges facing the news industry today.

The whole picture can be seen by different perspectives: how to combine print and digital formats; which approach to follow online - free of charge, relying on advertising or putting content behind a paywall accessible through subscriptions; how to make money from digital devices, such as tablets and smartphones.

Telegraph launches a new, paid-for version of its iPad app

The Daily Telegraph launched today an updated version of its iPad app, Financial Times reported. The new edition of The Telegraph for the iPad can be downloaded for a one-off fee of £1.19 or as part of a monthly subscription, priced at £9.99. The previous version of the app, launched last September, was free.

The app's new features include interactive crosswords, picture galleries and a seven-day archive of the paper's cartoons. Also added is the possibility to increase text size by "pinching", a 30-day archive of back issues and a night-reading mode.

The launch follows yesterday's news concerning Apple's deal with Hearst Corp, which saw the iPad manufacturer take a more flexible stance than before as regards its App Store terms. Financial Times's Tech Hub reported that Edward Roussel, The Telegraph's digital editor, described Apple as "co-operative and helpful" during the development of the app.

After Time Inc. and Hearst, the Daily Telegraph has become the latest news publisher to sign up to Apple's terms on digital subscriptions with its new iPad app. The Guardian reported that the app is free to download but charges readers £1.19 for a single edition, or £9.99 for a monthly subscription. Telegraph newspaper subscribers get full access to its iPad edition for free.

Which papers have the best chance of being around in ten years? Business Insider listed its picks.

The Guardian is 190 years old. Born on 5 May 1821 as the Manchester Guardian, the paper celebrates its long life during which it has essentially changed neither its ownership nor its character, it declared.

As Press Gazette reported yesterday, The Independent has given away 200,000 copies of the paper today, May 5th, as it publishes a 32-page supplement about the voting reform referendum. Editor-in-chief Simon Kelner said: "The Independent believes very strongly that the democratic health of a country depends on engagement of voters. By putting 200,000 free copies of The Independent into people's hands ahead of this crucial AV vote, we are providing readers with all the information they need to make an informed choice at the polls."

Apple signs deals with publishers over iPad subscriptions

After Bloomberg paved the way for making deals with Apple (Business Week was the first business publication to accept Apple's terms over apps subscriptions and signed with the company), the Cupertino giant is moving forward with new deals over iPad subscriptions with other publishers.

Apple's terms have found publishers reluctant to agree on, as Apple stipulated that it would take a 30% share of the subscription price and would refuse to share customer data with publishers, denying them access to statistics that could be very useful in terms of development and advertising.

As Media Post reported, the latest to sign with Apple is Hearst Corp, which has struck a deal to sell digital subscriptions for three titles -- Esquire, Popular Mechanics and O, The Oprah Magazine.

Hearst is the first publisher to sell subscriptions to multiple titles through Apple's iTunes subscription service.

iWatch News: the new watchdog journalism site by the Center for Public Integrity

The Center for Public Integrity announced yesterday, May 3rd - through a press release published by Poynter's Jim Romenesko - the launch of iWatch News, a new website dedicated to investigative and accountability reporting.
