Dow Jones & Company and SBI Holdings, Inc. of Japan formalized their joint venture, Wall Street Journal Japan K.K., which will launch a Japanese-language business and financial news Web site later this year. The joint venture agreement was first announced on May 7.

Under a licensing arrangement between Wall Street Journal Japan K.K. and Dow Jones, the new site, carrying The Wall Street Journal brand, will primarily feature Japanese translations of content, including video and other multimedia, from all print and online editions of The Wall Street Journal and those of other Dow Jones publications. Wall Street Journal Japan K.K. also plans to develop mobile products and services in conjunction with the new site.

The latest issue of Courrier International to hit French newsstands gathers translated newspaper articles themed on the uncertain future of the press. From Washington, in a lengthy set of extracts from the New Republic, Paul Starr makes three strong cases for why democracy will be endangered without a newspaper. He hints that American democracy may already have been slighted seeing that national, regional and local newspapers are dwindling in terms of content they can run since printing costs have caused them to scale back on the numbers of pages they print.

He opens his debate by lamenting the fact that Americans have taken [American] journalism (in the form of a printed newspaper) for granted as newspapers have been such an ''integral part of daily life in America, so central to politics and culture and business, and so powerful and profitable in their own right, that it is easy to forget what a remarkable historical invention they are.''

The Guardian published today the first of planned daily Chinese language translations of several leading articles to coincide with the release of its China focused mini-site, reported www.pressgazette.co.uk.

The Economist has made the news industry the special focus of its business section for its latest edition. "Established" news is described as "being blown away" but news in general is otherwise considered to be "thriving."

In an opening paragraph which does not bode well for advocates of traditional media, the Economist ponders if "the surest sign that newspapers are doomed is that politicians, so often their targets, are beginning to feel sorry for them," in reference to Barack Obama's pledge to newspapers last weekend at an industry dinner in Washington, as well as Massachusetts senator, John Kerry's commitment to help the "endangered species" and, in particular, his region's beloved Boston Globe.

The Wall Street Journal has launched a specifically Indian edition of WSJ.com along with enlarging its Asian site, following the earlier introduction of a Chinese language China edition. According to a press release, news teams in Hong Kong and New Delhi have been expanded to manage and develop content to "provide users a more regionally relevant experience with streamlined navigation and added multimedia features." There is more data on Indian and Asian markets for investors. The paper also launched an expanded web site dedicated to content for Europe and has expanded its news team in London and Brussels to manage and develop content for the site.

The paper also has a US edition, and Spanish and Portuguese sites for the Americas. According to Paid Content, the creation of an Indian site reflects new owner Rupert Murdoch's focus on key Asian markets, and readers accessing from India will be automatically redirected to the India edition, where they will have the option to choose their edition. In conjunction with the launches of the expanded sites, the WSJ's 'Mobile Reader' is now available in Asia and Europe, with specific regional content tabs and related markets settings.

There has been no sign yet of plans for any new accompanying print edition. In India, Dow Jones has received clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to launch a facsimile edition of the Wall Street Journal, but a facsimile edition would be one that is a replica of one produced abroad, including no local content. India did see the release of Mint, a financial publication born of a collaboration between the Hindustan Times and The Wall Street Journal back in February 2007.

The Hong Kong Economic Journal and Hong Kong Economic Times, the two largest Chinese-language business newspapers, have launched paid websites.

The Economic Times recently revamped its online and mobile services to attract more readers. Subscribers can now view entire pages of the newspaper and subscribers - who pay HKD350 (USD45) a year - have access to real-time market news and analysis, newspaper content, archives for the past three years, amongst other things.

The Economic Journal has attracted more than 8,000 registered subscribers since it launched in July. 7,000 joined in the early-bird registration campaign, paying HKD398 for a year's online access. The special early subscripton offer was closed last week and the prixce for subscription now HKD598. As an added inticement, the wall-respected Mr Cho column was also made available and a year of his archived articles. Subscribers need to pay HKD248 a year for access to Mr Cho's archive.

"I think [investigative journalism] is going through a difficult transitory period," said Emily Bell, editor-in-chief of guardian.co.uk, in a May interview, as part of The Guardian's "Future of Journalism" series. "The funding now available for people to concentrate for long periods of time on single subject stories, which may or may not come to fruition, has been greatly undermined by the restructuring of professional media."

Meanwhile, online news makes it harder than ever to hold onto an exclusive. As bits of the story are more likely to leak from different sources, the investigation loses its proprietary value.

But even as bloggers and journalists fret about the fate - and funding - of investigative journalism (and both hope ProPublica provides salvation), the Washington Post honors the year's top ten investigative pieces (in alphabetical order):

XFMedia, a leading media group in China, launched the Investor Journal this week, targeting the large and growing Chinese retail investor market.

The Chinese language newspaper, modeled on weekly financial publications like Barrons, is aimed at the top end of China's 96 million active brokerage accounts, those with over one million RMB in liquid assets, reports Asia Media Journal.

The paper has a staff of 60, including 12 financial analysts, and is distributed nationally. Its editors intend to fill an identified gap in the financial reporting market.  
 
"Currently, we believe there is no newspaper in China which delivers to investors truly trustworthy financial market information emphasizing in-depth analysis, reliable data combined with an international perspective," said Zhao Li, chief editor of Investor Journal.

The new Wall Street Journal was rolled out earlier this week with some significant changes. Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ) examines how the 119-year-old WSJ has changed since Rupert Murdoch took control, focusing on the front page every other weekday, and how the WSJ stands up next to The New York Times, Murdoch's declared competitor.

- The front page changed focus in the first four months from business coverage to domestic politics and international issues.
- From Dec. 13, 2007 to March 13, 2008, the front page covered politics and the presidential campaign three times as much, from 5% (four months before Murdoch) to 18%.
- Consequently, coverage of corporate American decreased more than half to 14% of front page space, compared to 30% pre-Murdoch.
- Coverage of foreign events that "do not directly involve the U.S." jumped from 18% to 25%. 9% of that relates to overseas economic and business affairs.
- Health and medicine dropped from 5% to less than 1%.
- Transportation issues dropped from 3% to 0%.
- Environmental topics dropped from 3% to 1%.

Categories that seemingly remain unchanged:
- Economics stayed at 15%.
- Coverage of foreign events "in which the U.S. played a major role" remained at 4%.
- Lifestyle coverage stayed at about 4% as well as education at 3%.

An example of the "changing news agenda" was the front page on April 21, the day before the presidential election Pennsylvania primary. There were two campaign stories and the headline: T "Latest Attacks Roil Democrats." A "more traditional Journal story," about problems at smaller-to-midsize banks was pushed to the bottom half of the page with a story about "easing tensions between China and a small island controlled by Taiwan," according to PEJ.


PEJ observes that the front pages of the WSJ and NY Times from Dec. 13, 2007 to March 13, 2008 are "not the same, certainly not yet."
- Politics: WSJ devotes 18% of the newshole to politics, but the Times filled 27% of its newshole with politics.
- Business: WSJ still gave more coverage with 14%  than the Times with 4%.
- Economics: WSJ covered it more with 15%, compared to the Times with 9%.
- Foreign affairs involving the U.S.:  The Times at 8% produced about twice as much coverage as the Journal at 4%.
- International events not directly related to the U.S.: The Journal had more coverage at 25% to the Times attention at 17%.

The Washington Post won a record six Pulitzer prizes on April 7th, topping the paper's previous record of four Pulitzers in 2006.

The Post took home the public service medal honoring its expose on Walter Reed hospital, which revealed the negligent care of American war casualties.

"It's a reminder of what basic journalism can get you involved in," said Washington Post reporter Dana Priest, one of reporters on the Walter Reed story. "At a time when journalism is under this cloud of financial uncertainty, reporters have to stay focused, and if we don't, we sort of doom people like the Army specialist who lived with the cockroaches in Building 18. We can do better than that."

Other awards for the Post included the breaking-news award for its coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings, as well as a prize in national reporting for an examination of Vice President Dick Cheney's behind the scenes influence.

The New York Times received two Pulitzers, recognizing the paper's investigative reporting about toxins in medicine and consumer products from China, and for explanatory reporting on an article targeting the ethical dilemmas of DNA testing.

Others in the winner's circle included The Chicago Tribune, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Boston Globe, and Investor's Business Daily, Reuters, and The Concord Monitor.  

No prize was awarded for editorial writing this year.

Poynter writer Leann Frola reports on the annual American Copy Editors Society convention. Among the main issues, what is happening to the role of copy editors, whose numbers seem to be thinning out of the newsroom – at a time when they are even more important?

Newspaper circulations in the West may be declining, but in several of the world's developing countries, especially India, print-on-paper publishers are enjoying rapid growth and soaring profits.

Amidst a whirlwind of controversy over the reliability of his product, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said in an interview with Business Week Online that Wikipedia should be viewed "as a work in progress -- it's our intention to be Britannica or better quality, and our policies and everything are designed with that goal in mind. We don't reach that quality yet -- we know that. We're a work in progress."

Last month in Moscow, the Russian Guild of Press Publishers held the First Russian Publishers Conference.  During the Press Freedom Seminar, President of the World Editors Forum and Saturday Editor of The Times (London), George Brock, gave a talk discussing the freedom of the press in Russia, whose text is posted below. 

The New York Times' paid wall experiment raised a lot of fuss in the online media world back in September and still gets on the nerves of the blogosphere.  But is it really all that hard to find those hidden articles?  What about other paid subscription sites?  Do paid walls work?

Yesterday, as the Wall Street Journal's European and Asian edition relaunched in a new design and a compact format, the two editions also started partnerships with major Asian and European newspapers. A new section, called "Across Europe" and "Across Asia" respectively, features content from each five major newspapers in the area, reports Media Week. The sections appear on the European and Asian home page of the Wall Street Journal and are a further attempt to integrate the print and online versions of the paper.

To read in the International Herald Tribune: "China has ordered the closure of the influential bimonthly journal Strategy and Management after it published a controversial article on North Korea, according to one of its editors. A leading academic journal that covered diplomacy, domestic politics and economics, Strategy and Management was respected at home and abroad for publishing thought-provoking, independent views that sometimes challenged government policies. One of the editors said it was ordered to stop publication because of an article in its fourth issue this year that was highly critical of North Korea. The editor did not specify which article."
