The French government is considering subsidies for France's number one press distribution company Presstalis, Le Figaro reports.

French Prime Minister François Fillon has assigned the delicate task to Inspector-General of Finances Bruno Mettling. He will consider the conditions under which exceptional state support could be granted.

Newspaper readers in France have been disrupted this week, after distribution company Presstalis blocked the distribution of papers to different parts of the country two days in a row. In response to the action, one newspaper has refused to publish an edition today.

It was northern France and part of central France that went without their national daily newspapers on Wednesday. Papers were distributed normally in the east, west and south. Le Monde made a PDF version of that day's paper available for free on its website.

On Thursday, distribution was interrupted in the east and south of the country. By contrast, the north of France, including Paris, received its newspapers mostly as normal. Only Le Figaro and France Soir suffered a smaller distribution than normal in this area.

Sunday was the second anniversary of Murdoch's purchase of The Wall Street Journal, an event that many press and journalism experts decried as sullying the hallowed status of the respected paper. Under Murdoch's leadership, the Journal has turned away from business-only analytical focus and towards broader general interest stories and politics with big front-page photos.

Staff at French daily newspapers Le Parisien and Aujourd'hui en France have reiterated their opposition to their management's planned job cuts, but rejected plans for another strike.

At a meeting of staff on Monday, a motion declaring opposition to any job cuts was adopted in unanimity except for three abstentions. The management has refused to comment on the motion.

In a move that saw two daily newspapers absent from news stands in France, editorial staff at Le Parisien and Aujourd'hui en France have gone on strike.

Last week, staff were protesting against management's restructuring plans, which would include cuts to 35 staff. The newspapers did not publish a Wednesday edition, but were back on the stands on Thursday. 

French Minister for Culture and Communication Frédéric Mitterrand officially launched the program "Mon journal offert" « My free newspaper » yesterday, which offers readers aged between 18 and 24 a free yearly subscription to a newspaper of their choice.

It had been known for some time that the French government has been considering a proposal to offer free newspapers to youths as part of wider scheme to help boost newspaper readership and attempt to bail out the industry.

Turkey's largest media company Dogan Yayin launched a court challenge yesterday to a demand by tax authorities for a guarantee for the $3.3 billion fine the group is facing, which was then rejected, according to Today's Zaman. The tax authorities are asking for the full value of the fine as collateral while the group makes an appeal in court. The company was ordered to pay $2.53 billion in early September for back-taxes and fines, a total which has since increased.

Dogan Yayin owns two out of the three top-selling newspapers in Turkey, Milliyet and Hurriyet, and two of the four most-watched television stations. 

Mario Garcia recently published an article discussing the future model of the newspaper.  He referenced Philip Meyers recent article in American Journalism Review, which also presented some ideas on where newspapers and journalism are headed.

Garcia uses a few examples to illustrate his view of the future.  First, The Economist, with its unique "information architecture and navigation", creative visuals, distinct personality, in-depth analysis and interpretation, and focused content is an example of what many people desire to read and enjoy reading today.

Many newsreaders may have been surprised this morning when they awoke to a completely revamped New York Times website. As for all new things, it may take a little getting used to, but overall, the Times appears to be on the right path; its numerous new features take significant steps towards the future of online news production and reading.

In his weekly Guardian column, Jeff Jarvis describes the website that he sees as the future of media, Digg.com. Launched by "scruffy geek," Kevin Rose, Digg is a site whose users become news editors by scouring the Web for articles, posting what they find interesting and then voting on what other articles they "dig," or in other words, articles they enjoyed and think other users should read. Articles which receive the most votes make it to the front page.

The Washington Post's newly appointed ombudsman, Deborah Howell, tipped off a serious debate about the differences in journalistic styles between the paper's print and online newsrooms. The spat illustrates that several predictions by media pundits about the future of the newspapers are being realized.

It is interesting to hear that The Daily Express in England has switched its support to the Conservatives after seven years of supporting the Labour party. Todays newspaper devoted six pages to what it called an "historic decision." According to Owen Gibson, chief reporter at The Guardian the newspaper believes "the sooner Britain is rid of the party the better" and goes on to attack Labour's policies on crime, health, education and Europe.

The Daily Express is a tabloid newspaper, which has had an ongoing rivalry with the Daily Mail. The Daily Express is not as right wing as its opponent, however with this switch in support for the Conservative Party its political stance may perhaps be changing.
