Spain: Business journalism needs to look for a new model

At the newsXchange 2008 conference in Valencia, a new business model for business reporting has been urged. At the conference, British journalist and founder of the Work Foundation (the former Industrial Society), Will Hutton said, "We take the truth as handed down by the business elite, especially in the US... There is an obligation to be tougher in the questions we ask."

Duncan Stanworth of BBC Monitoring reports that Hutton also said, "All of us, including journalists, suspended our judgment and we are paying the price."

Media outlets had been mouthpieces for "neoconservative, neoliberal" pro-deregulation economists over the last 15 years, said Jeremy Rifkin of the Foundation on Economic Trends.

Al-Jazeera TV political analyst Marwan Bishara said the crisis heralded a time for "soul searching" among journalists. "How far are we in bed with power?" he asked.

Onno Ruding from the Centre for European Policy Studies said, "Journalists should devote time to longer-term matters and seek the views of two or three sides. Select those voices and give them a wider audience." Ruding went on to say that there was a risk of going from the "extreme optimism" of the boom years to "eternal depression".

Caroline Little, Adviser to Guardian News & Media and former CEO and publisher of Washington Post/Newsweek Interactives, United States:

"Keep one foot rooted in the core journalism values of the core product, and one that happens to be delivering the most revenue, and with the other, stretch as far as possible to try new things in this new medium."

"The news websites share the same journalistic values as the newspapers, but the web folks also are working in a medium that's indisputably different, one that requires trying new things and sometimes going down in flames," she said. "Fear of failure can be debilitating. All we have to lose by being too conservative is everything."

Spain: Redesigned financial site cincodias.com launches

On September 22, cincodias.com launched a upgraded website with new content, layout and design.  Cincodias is the business and financial web site of the daily publication, Cinco Dias.  

Some of the new sections include, technology, income taxes and real estate.  The site has also enriched its content by adding more coverage on market data, new comparative tools, digital interviews, a flash graph, and blogs.  Users will now have personalized pages where they will be able to interact with professionals.

The Digital Revenue Gold Mine

Newspaper companies have been successful in generating audience and attention with their digital platforms. But the Holy Grail for newspaper companies is how to produce significant revenues online.

Companies that have had success in making money from the web -- from citizen journalism, cross-media advertising, web TV, mobile and other digital strategies -- will be featured in the World Digital Publishing Conference & Expo, to be held in Amsterdam on 15 and 16 October.

Speakers at the World Association of Newspapers event will include Caroline Little, CEO of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, Manual Mirat, CEO of Prisacom in Spain, Eric Scherer, Business Development Director of Agence France Presse's Olympics coverage, Jorma Harkonen, Director of Bonnier's MTV3 mobile strategy in Finland, and many others.

UK journalists leaders in blogging and videomaking

According to the European Journalism Centre (EJC), UK journalists are more likely to be blogging and producing videos as part of their job, a European Digital Journalism Study about the effects of the digital age revealed.

The study surveyed 347 journalists from 9 European countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the UK) from regional, national, broadcast and trade media. It was conducted by PR firm Brands2Life and Oriella PR Network, their European partners.

61 % of UK journalists said their publication provided TV or video features, as opposed to 41 % from other European countries.

Over 75 % of UK journalists said the most challenging part about their job was producing "additional multimedia content for the web", EJC reports.

UK journalists are the premier bloggers, since 85 % said their websites had a blogging feature. Only 10 % out of the total and 14 % from the UK said that they had professional media production training.

Göteborg: Nettby.no - expanding young community

JO Christian Oterhals, Head of Development at VG Multimedia & Chairman of the Board at Nettby Community AS, Norway, spoke about his companies' forays into social networking at the Annual Digital Media Round Table, a session at the 61st World Newspaper Congress.
 
The VG.no website takes pride in doing news, and doing it well. But it's a site for grown ups, and the company is trying to get younger people interested. They have developed a very successful web community, Nettby.no. It is now the largest community in Norway.

Jo Christian Oterhals says that the reason they wanted to get the attention of younger people is that if you have competitors, you can never have 100 percent of the market shares, so you need more than one product. For VG.no the other product is nettby.no.

Nettby.no is not about content, it's about conversation. It's for the young people who don't yet use Facebook; young people who don't have that many friends yet. Nettby.no gives them an opportunity to get some. They are able to look for friends by interest, geography etc. 

It has been very successful in Norway, where it was first launched. You can find 61 percent of the Norwegian teens there, according to Jo Christian Oterhals. And it is especially popular among teenage girls.

However, launching the web site in Sweden was not successful since the Swedish teenagers found mostly Norwegian teens on the web site. This was not popular and it soon disappeared. VG.no made another try in Spain in March this year. So far the results have been good.

On Nettby.no everyone has a say on what improvements should be made. The administrators have an open dialogue with the users about what to change on the site. Jo Christian Oterhals thinks this is one of the main things making Nettby.no successful. There are also Bouncers - volunteers making sure every one is following the rules. Nettby.no is looking for devoted and loyal users. 

They work a lot with advertising campaigns on the site. The ads are different from traditional ones. The Nettby.no-users are involved in the campaigns and it has to have a good content and offer something.

The next step for VG.no and Nettby.no is further international expansion.

Norway's leading websites adapt to social media for success

Kristine Lowe, a freelance journalist, looked at how Norway's leading websites, Schibsted-owned VG, Norway's most read news site and NRK, Norway's public broadcaster, have successfully attracted online audiences. VG has developed Nettby, a social network that's only rivaled by Facebook in Norway, to gain even more readers

VG, with 2.7 million unique users "has the world's ugliest website," according to Torry Pedersen, editor-in-chief of VG online (take a look at this piece about Scandinavian website design). But, as Pedersen explains, while most news sites have an organized layout with clearly defined sections, VG gives its readers the opportunity to read "both a well argued piece on file-sharing and a story on Britney Spears' latest escapade." Nettby, already with 657,000 members, is in the process of expanding to Sweden and Spain.

In the last year, NRK has almost doubled its online traffic with a 42 per cent increase in unique users, mostly because they present themselves on already popular sites such as Facebook and YouTube.

"There are three ways to deal with what is happening with social media," said Bjarne Andre Myklebust, head of NRK's online division. "You choose not to be present; you choose to make your own services that can compete with Facebook, as VG has been successful with; or you choose to be present where people are to increase familiarity with your brand and strengthen distribution."

Citizen journalism takes hold in the Spanish-speaking world

Igooh.gifCitizen journalism, long the domain of the English-language media, has caught on in the Spanish-speaking world, where the number of citizen media portals are increasing, thanks in part to initiatives from major Spanish-language newspapers.

January marked the launch of the first citizen journalism site in Boliva, AhoraBolivia.com. Boliva's issues don't receive much coverage in the international or national media, for that matter, a gap that the creators and contributors to AhoraBolivia are trying to fill, reports MediaShift.

In Argentina, would-be citizen journalists have a choice of both independent and newspaper sponsored projects. In one corner is igooh.com, founded by freelance writer Ignacio Escribano in 2006 to offer an alternative to a traditional press that he considered "narrow-minded and primitive." Users have to option to share news, but also discuss more philosophical topics such as poetry and the meaning of the death. Though mostly independent, Argentine newspaper La Nacion provides a link to Igooh on their website.

Other options include a network of blogs spearheaded by Argentine newspaper Clarin.

Similar projects have come out of Chile, with Gua 3.0 and Asociacion Atina Chile, a non-profit organization dedicated to civic participation. Spain too is in on the action, where El Pais has created a specific citizen journalism portal called "Yo, Periodista" ("I, Journalist"). Another interesting initiative is the pan-Spanish site PeriodismoCiudadano.com, ("Citizen Journalism"), provides daily news about citizen journalism in Spanish and allows for contribution as well.

 "In my opinion, the citizen journalism movement is progressing better in Latin America than in Spain," said Oscar Espiritusanto, founder of PeriodismoGiudadano.com. "A good example is the good work Chile's Asociacion Atina Chile is doing with its network of citizen newspapers, which show that citizen journalism works, covers stories that professional journalism does not."

Europe: Results from Nordic publishing houses lower than usual

Two profitable Nordic media groups, Schibsted in Norway and SanomaWSOY in Finland, have suffered disappointing results and dropping share prices in the last month. 

The figures are relative; for most publishing groups such figures would be welcomed, but for these particular houses, who are traditionally strong revenue generators, they are disappointing.

In Norway, Schibsted is still suffering losses in its home market due to a rapid shift from print to online. However, although it has faced circulation cuts on papers such as its tabloid Verdens Gang, it has not lost readers. Indeed the website is responsible for more than 30% of Verdens Gang’s revenue.

Schibsted has been affected more by losses in classified advertising, both print and web, from its holdings in Spain, France, and Italy.

In Finland, lower figures were not a result of circulation and advertising drops; rather SanomaWSOY cited increased marketing costs and new product launches at the root of the problem.

Some positive news comes out of Scandinavia as well; Bonnier, a Swedish private international media company, announced in a press release that their sales rose 45% in 2007.

Bertrand Pecquerie, Director, World Editors Forum

BPecquerie__1__1.jpgBertrand, French, was appointed Director of the World Editors Forum (WEF) in 2003.

From 1989 to 2002, he served as CEO of the World Media Network - a subsidiary of Libération, France -, a press syndicate gathering major European, South American, Arabic and Asian newspapers (El Pais, La Stampa, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Der Standard, Publico, Berlingske Tidende, Folha de S. Paulo, La Nacion, Al Ahram, An Nahar, Milliyet, Yomiuri Shimbun...).

 From 1996 to 2001 Bertrand was also in charge of World Media Live, a subsidiary of Vivendi Universal in charge of international websites (Cannes Film Festival, Tour de France...). Formerly, Bertrand was a lecturer at the "Institut d'Etudes Politiques" in Paris and a columnist in Le Matin de Paris.
