A new report from private equity firm Veronis Suhler Stevenson predicts that Internet ad spend will surpass print ad spend by 2011. Over the next four years, Internet advertising will grow at an average rate of 21%, reaching a total of $61.98 billion in 2011, whereas print advertising will continue to grow slowly, topping off at $60 billion in 2011.

Like many aspects of the Web, news is becoming a collaborative activity. Social news sites such as digg.com and Newsvine have infinitely increased their audience over the past year, attracting audiences through a system of voting on their favorite stories. But sometimes democracy doesn’t provide the best in news. To fill the gap between traditional editorial boards and the wisdom of the crowds, a social news site based on trust has been created. NewsTrust.net, which goes public today, strives to help newshounds find quality journalism. The site’s founder, Fabrice Florin, gave the Editors Weblog a sneak peek at the ideas and hard work behind the latest in social news.

Since the shock that the Internet is changing the way in which news is produced and consumed has worn off, the discussion has turned to how things are changing. Here are a few of the latest ways in which journalism is transforming for the future.

World football’s governing body, FIFA, and the World Association of Newspapers, WAN, today announced that they had reached agreement to lift all restrictions on digital publication of photographs of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

WAN has been negotiating with FIFA for seven months to overturn restrictions made by FIFA to web coverage of the soccer World Cup and ensure the free flow of information concerning the event to the media and by extension the public at large (see previous postings - see sources).
  

Today is a very important day for the future of sport news. Because FIFA has accepted to remove all restrictions about  online coverage - but not for mobile phones - of the Football World Cup (to be held in Germany in June 2006), there is now a major hope that the same scenario will happen for the 2008 Olympic games and that national sport leagues will limit their demands for restrictions.

What are the main lessons of this victory for press freedom against pure commercial interests:

1) all press organisations were united behind the World Association of Newspapers; from news agencies (AFP, Reuters...) to international organisations (ENPA in Europe), to national organisations such as ASNE, the American organisation of editors. When football is a major sport - as in Brazil or Germany -, news organisations also rallied and discussed the legal basis of so many restrictions.

Whew! What a turbulent year for the newspaper industry. One would think that after so many developments, positive and negative, that the storm would be ebbing. But 2005 may be just the beginning.

Lately, the newspaper industry has been worried about the 18-34 demographic, one that they are losing to new media and which advertisers, who consider this generation their primary target, are following. But have newspapers been concerned with the habits of the next age group down, 12-17 year olds? According to a new study, they should be.

The Los Angeles Times is extending its celebrity coverage with a new website focused on award shows called The Envelope. LAT's press release describes the site as, " An insider's resource, The Envelope is an original content, multimedia Website featuring exclusive in-depth reporting, photo galleries, videos, podcasts, lists, forums, polls, expert roundtables, archives and analysis of awards shows by some of the biggest names in entertainment journalism, including writers from the Los Angeles Times."

The site demonstrates two trends in the newspaper industry. 

Variety and Tribune Media Services which belongs to Tribune Co., owner of Los Angeles Times, have agreed on a syndication deal, reports LA Business Journal. Tribune Media Services, together with Reed Elsevier Plc, publisher of Variety, is said to launch its entertainment news service on September 26. Stories from Daily Variety, Weekly Variety, Variety.com etc. will be available to subscribers of the Tribune Media Service.

LA Business Journal stated: "The arrangement is intended to boost revenues at Tribune, which like other media companies has seen circulation of its newspaper properties drop in the face of competition from cable, the Internet and other new media."

Newspapers are trying to boost revenues and entertainment is something that sells. That is why such partnerships with entertainment papers and magazines might become more common ( see also previous posting).

"Northwestern women students wearing flip flops to a White House ceremony" - not exactly a story one would consider to be a hot topic. But nevertheless it received big coverage in the media. Louis B. Raffel called it "herd journalism" in the Chicago Tribune. He concludes: "Cute story, but what ever happened to news judgment?" Is this story maybe an example for a wider trend in news coverage to be softer and more entertaining while serious news stuff is declining? Are news values changing?

The importance of newspapers differs significantly by age group, with 38% of 35 to 54 year-old newspaper readers indicating that reading the newspaper is an important part of their day, compared to only 17% of 18 to 24 year-old readers. Attitudes toward newspapers are generally most favorable among the 35 to 54 year-old demographic with one notable exception -- trust. Fifty percent of 18 to 24 year-old newspaper readers say they trust the news they get in newspapers, compared to only 35% of 35 to 54 year-old readers."
