France's Le Figaro is to launch the New York Times supplement the Times International Weekly, taking over from national daily Le Monde, which recently cut the liftout in order to save costs.

Le Monde intitated the agreement with the Times out of a desire to have more international information following the September 11 attacks and has published the supplement every Saturday in English since April 2002.

Morocco blocked the distribution of El País on Saturday after the Spanish daily reproduced two cartoons considered to "undermine the institution of the monarchy," reports AFP.

The first image, by French cartoonist, Jean Plantu, was originally printed in Le Monde last Thursday, and depicts 'a hand reaching out of a Moroccan flag to create a child-like drawing of a funny face wearing a crown'. The cartoon also resulted in a ban on distribution of Le Monde in Morocco on both Thursday and Friday.

Ezio Mauro, the Italian editor whose newspaper is being sued for defamation by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi likens the situation to attacks on the American press during the Watergate scandal that ultimately led to the resignation of US President Richard Nixon.
 
"Like the American journalists, our journalists were doing their work and were publishing information that had to be published," said Mr Mauro, Editor-in-chief of La Repubblica, speaking at a World Editors Forum conference in Prague, Czech Republic.
 
 "We are a democratic country, where citizens have the right to be informed, and it is the obligation and role of media to provide information," he said.
 
La Repubblica is being sued for defamation by Mr Berlusconi for repeatedly publishing 10 questions asking the Prime Minister to explain his extra-marital relationships and behaviour, the subjects of widely reported public scandals this year.  Several other newspapers and journalists have also come under attack by Mr Berlusconi and his supporters.
 
 "It is not only an attack on La Repubblica but on freedom of the press", said Mr Mauro.
 
"Is it right that, in Italy, you're a journalist and you criticise Mr Berlusconi even a little bit and you actually have to worry about your position and your future? That is a big problem in our every day life as journalists because that can make you self-censor information that you're going to write about."
 
Mr Mauro said repeatedly publishing the 10 questions was a legitimate journalistic action because Mr Berlusconi refused to answer them.
 
He also said Mr Berlusconi's private life was a legitimate subject of journalistic investigation because of its political implications, because Mr Berlusconi raised the subject himself, and because of questions that have been raised - by Mr Belusconi's wife among others - about his behaviour and his health.
 
"It could be said that Mr Berlusconi has an enormous talent for dismantling the wall between private and public life," said Mr Mauro. "Mr Berlusconi published a book with private photos and public photos included. He has turned attention to his private life corresponding with his public life, and its basis for the success of his career."
 
"But this has turned against him," Mr Mauro said. Mr Berlusconi has "become a prisoner of the macho personality he has built with his own hands."
 
Mr Mauro was the keynote speaker at the World Editor Forum's 2015 Newsroom Conference. Xavier Vidal-Folch, President of WEF and Deputy Director of El Pais in Spain, said: "It is not often that press freedom is under threat in the heart of Europe, where a government has forbidden the publication of information of public interest, even if it relates to the private life of a prime minister. This is the case of Italy."

The editor of Italian daily L'Avvenire quit his post yesterday following allegations in a newspaper controlled by the Berlusconi family that he had been involved in a homosexual harassment scandal, the Independent and other media reported. Dino Boffo's newspaper, which gives voice to the Italian Bishops' Conference, has been very critical of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi regarding his own alleged sexual indiscretions. 

Although many newspapers now offer e-reader editions via Kindle, Spain's PRISA group takes a step forward with a bundled subscription that includes three of the group's publications. Along with national daily El País, subscribers will also receive access to Cinco Días, a business journal, and As, a sports newspaper.

El País does not report an official launch date or price for the e-editions, which will become available to American Kindle owners "in the coming months." Currently, Amazon only sells its Kindle device in the United States.

A new portal supported by the European Commission "aims to get EU citizens across the 27 member states talking and reading about the same issues" by translating selected articles from 250 of the continent's newspapers into 10 different languages. Titles such as France's Le Figaro, Spain's El Pais and the UK's Guardian will be involved in the project, which will employ 10 journalists and receive €3 million of EC funds per year.

The site is lead by Courrier International, along with Internazionale in Italy, Forum Polityka in Poland and Courrier Internacional in Portugal, and hopes to have all 23 of the EU's official languages involved within the next five years. EU communications commissioner Margot Wallstrom explained that the site will "broaden, enrich and expand coverage of European affairs," allowing Europeans to read European coverage from other nation's perspectives, instead of being limited to their own national newspapers.

A new court ruling in Madrid has exclusively granted intellectual property rights to newspapers, giving them total control over their own content.

The case first came to court more than two years ago when a total of 55 newspaper editors challenged a company called Documentación de Medios, for using content as part of their press-clipping service.

The Spanish media has rallied together in an effort to gain government support to save the country's television, radio and press from demise, with newspapers seeking generous tax breaks.

The various branches of the communications industry have each put together their own list of proposals, which have since been presented to the government.

Spanish daily El País has just announced plans to integrate its newsrooms.  From the 1st March, quality content for the newspaper, the website and for mobile phones will all be produced by one team of 500 journalists, managed by the current newspaper director Javier Moreno.

Juan Luis Cebrián, executive president of PRISA (the group which publishes El País) made the announcement and said that the move is the biggest change for the paper since its creation in 1976.  But he says that 'It is the only way in which El País will still exist in 10 years time'.

Citizen journalism, long the domain of the English-language media, has caught on in the Spanish-speaking world, where the number of citizen media portals are increasing, thanks in part to initiatives from major Spanish-language newspapers.

January marked the launch of the first citizen journalism site in Boliva, AhoraBolivia.com. Boliva's issues don't receive much coverage in the international or national media, for that matter, a gap that the creators and contributors to AhoraBolivia are trying to fill, reports MediaShift.

In Argentina, would-be citizen journalists have a choice of both independent and newspaper sponsored projects. In one corner is igooh.com, founded by freelance writer Ignacio Escribano in 2006 to offer an alternative to a traditional press that he considered "narrow-minded and primitive." Users have to option to share news, but also discuss more philosophical topics such as poetry and the meaning of the death. Though mostly independent, Argentine newspaper La Nacion provides a link to Igooh on their website.

Other options include a network of blogs spearheaded by Argentine newspaper Clarin.

Similar projects have come out of Chile, with Gua 3.0 and Asociacion Atina Chile, a non-profit organization dedicated to civic participation. Spain too is in on the action, where El Pais has created a specific citizen journalism portal called "Yo, Periodista" ("I, Journalist"). Another interesting initiative is the pan-Spanish site PeriodismoCiudadano.com, ("Citizen Journalism"), provides daily news about citizen journalism in Spanish and allows for contribution as well.

 "In my opinion, the citizen journalism movement is progressing better in Latin America than in Spain," said Oscar Espiritusanto, founder of PeriodismoGiudadano.com. "A good example is the good work Chile's Asociacion Atina Chile is doing with its network of citizen newspapers, which show that citizen journalism works, covers stories that professional journalism does not."

Spain’s top media company Prisa, announced on Monday it had taken legal action against US-based media firm Nielsen. Prisa charges Nielsen for what it called an “unjustified” downgrade of the group’s audience figures for the website of its newspaper, El Pais.

Several major newsrooms have chosen to integrate their print and online operations to adapt to the digital age, including the Daily Telegraph in the UK and Fairfax in Australia, and most recently The New York Times moving into its new building. But most newspapers remain non-integrated or consider – such as Le Monde in France or El Pais in Spain – that full integration is not the best choice. In light of this debate, the Weblog interviewed Bruno Patino, Vice President of Le Monde group and President of Le monde interactif, to figure out which is the ‘right’ way to rethink the newsroom, or whether or not integration should be the main concern altogether.

The Spanish online news site, ELPAIS.com, has launched a new section for citizen journalism. “Yo periodista” is an interactive section in which citizens can publish news at any time.

Spanish media group Prisa, owner of El Pais, has completed the sale of its ‘24-hour’ process to two of the most prestigious European newspapers: British The Guardian and Italian La Stampa. El Pais’ technology enables online users to read customized version of their paper.

Media group Prisa, owner of the daily El Pais, announced that its net profit soared by 50% in 2006. Full-year profits rose €228.9 million, thanks to an 89.6% in total revenues. That’s one newspaper group that’s doing well, thanks to its media diversification.

The theme of the 14th World Editors Forum, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from June 3 through 6, will be  "Quality Journalism in the Digital Age." The world's most-circulated Spanish-language publication, El Pais , has introduced a new, redesigned website, changing its name from elpais.es to elpais.com (readers are still able to access the site through the .es address). The site has also been refocused on several "pillars", the two principal ones being video and citizen participation.
