Online video platform Brightcove Inc. announces a deal with OMS, Germany's Web-based sales and marketing network for regional newspaper titles, which will permit the latter to establish an online video network for member titles. Video content would be taken from international and national media outlets as well as from which is produced by local newspapers.

The launch of Economia e Financas, an Angolan state-owned economics weekly newspaper that is published by Edições Novembro-EP, may indicate that there is a growing interest in the Angolan economy, according to Manuel Miguel de Carvalho "Wadijimbi", Deputy Minister of Social Communication, reports AllAfrica.com.

According to AllAfrica.com, the paper, launched last Tuesday, will "help publicise locally and abroad the advances in agriculture, industry, expansion of the country's electric network and other achievements."

Around 10 contributors as well as some contributors will be writing for the paper. The first issue of Economia e Financas (to be published on August 29 with 20,000 copies) will be released as a special edition that will be given out for free to invitees.

José Ribeiro, the Director General of Edições Novembro-EP, suggests that the amelioration of the design and contents of the publisher's titles are part of an initiative by the Social Communication Ministry.

In 2007, the only daily in Angola was redesigned in order "to adjust it to the modern standards of the world journalism", according to AllAfrica.com.

De Carvalho pointed out that the Social Communication Ministry is optimizing its media outlets and that the Angola Press Agency is advancing its information services by launching an online portal that will provide "privileged" and "reliable" information, writes AllAfrica.com.

Agostinho Chitata, director of the newly launched Economia e Financas, is urging sources to cooperate with the media.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) asked Georgia to stop censoring Russian-language press and has asked for all sides of the conflict in South Ossetia to inform the public through "free reporting", reported gipp.ru.

"The world needs to know what is happening and we appeal to both Russian and Georgian authorities to allow media to operate and journalists to work freely", said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary.

The IFJ showed also showed concern that Russian reporters might be too influenced by the Kremlin in their coverage of the events.

"Georgia claims to be a democratic country and Russia claims to respect international laws but in reality they seem to be paying lip service to these obligations. It is in the interest of peace, reconciliation and rights of both communities to let media work freely", the IFJ says.

The Federal Mass Media Inspection Service accused the St. Petersburg edition of Russian daily newspaper Novaya Gazeta of advocating hatred towards Georgians, warning the paper that it risks being shut down if it defies the media and extremism laws again.

The Press Complaints Commission (PCC) backed a complaint that was made against video footage that is on The Sun's website. The footage was obtained through the use of a hidden camera, which defies clause 10 of the PCC code, reported Journalism.co.uk.

The video clip showed a man, who was convicted of being in possession of pornographic imagery, at his job in a supermarket. The video was meant to be a feature of a story about a delivery to a nursery school kitchen, even though it had only showed the man in the supermarket.

The PCC said that the "public element of the story" wasn't present in the Sun footage. According to the PCC, there has to be a strong public interest in a story in order to validate the use of undercover cameras.

The Guardian's Peter Wilby argues today that in the recent conflict between Russia and Georgia in South Ossatia, "the Georgians played the PR game more skilfully."

He says the Georgian PR machine quickly sprung into action at the start of the conflict, posting press releases to news organisations around the world on the hour as the fighting began.

Wilby argues that the media was slightly blind sided by the conflict, with most reporters in Bejing covering the Olympics or on their summer holidays. As a result, the Georgian PR machine's press releases filled the information vacuum. He argues, "Readers want bombs, tanks and death tolls. They need to be told who are the goodies and baddies. News, remember, is part of the entertainment industry."

Wilby also says that he noted the language used in the press releases, "the use of terms that trigger western media interest: civilian victims, nuclear, humanitarian, occupation, ethnic cleansing." The press release is not something commonly used by the Russians.

The media did rapidly mobilise itself to cover the conflict, but the Georgian's PR machine's readiness for the conflict assisted them in winning vital hearts and minds.

UK news organisations are gearing up to cover the Olympics on a scale never seen before.

The Times

The Times will be road testing working with its News Corp sister titles around the world to keep Times Online running as a 24-hour news operation. Times Online has been running all night in recent weeks by handing over its out-of-hours operations to a newsroom in Australia.
The Times will have a team of 14 coververing the games. Times Online news editor Jeremy Griffin said: "It's only really in the last few years that the true benefits of having the online team working with the traditional newspaper team have really come to the fore and we want to exploit that this year." The Times will also be sharing multimedia resources with News.com.au, which has built a studio in Beijing's Olympic media centre, where Griffin will produce a daily video report.

The Guardian

The Guardian is sending the largest team it has ever sent to a sporting event with a 15 strong team covering all the events in Beijing. The integrated team will run an Olympics desk in Beijing. "Everyone is working for everything - that's where we're heading as a business, so this is a moment where we do it this way," said Guardian sports editor Ben Clissitt.

The Sun

The Sun Online will be sending a video journalist to the games and freelance video journalists as well.

The Daily Telegraph is sending 19 journaliss to the Olympics, including feature writers and specialists.

Chinese Authorities appear to have lifted some of the internet restrictions for journalists covering the games after holding talks with the International Olympic Committee yesterday.

Journalist are now able to access websites such as, "Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the BBC's Chinese service", according to Bloomberg.

Beijing Olympic organizing committee spokesman Sun Weide said that, "Beijing organizers will honour the promise to the IOC to provide sufficient access'' and that "at the moment the channel for reporters to use the Internet is fully open.''

On 17 July IOC President Jacques Rogge said that there would be no censorship of the Internet during the Olympics. However, earlier this week China decided to censor sites such as Amnesty International or any sites with "Tibet" in the address. According to China these sites "propagated information'' banned under Chinese law.

Sophie Peer, China campaign coordinator for Amnesty International, said that is was rare that Chinese Government "changes its policy over media issues".

Despite this easing of restrictions, blocking still remains for sites such as "Free Tibet".

Chinese President Hu Jintao said in a rare interview with foreign reporters on Friday, "We also hope you will provide objective and impartial coverage of what you see here so that your report can enhance the communication and understanding between Chinese people and people from other parts of the world."

Journalists going to Beijing for the Olympics have just learned that China intends to censor internet access at the Olympic venues as they do in the rest of the country. And, in the run-up to the Olympics, China has time and again reneged on its promises to allow free reporting.

Journalists trying to do their jobs in China are not the only people concerned -- in recent weeks, some 3,500 newspaper readers have written to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao calling for the release of all jailed journalists in China.

Those readers were responding to public service advertisements from the World Association of Newspapers, published in newspapers in 20 countries, drawing attention to China's failure to honour its Olympic promises.

Something to think about as you watch the Olympics this summer: China is the world's biggest jailer of journalists, with 30 journalists and 50 cyber-dissidents behind bars.

Gannett Co., which publishes papers like the USA Today, announced yesterday that it made a minority investment in Mogulus, an online video platform from New York. According to Craig A. Dubow, Gannett Co.'s chairman, president and CEO, live Web broadcasting tools are vital in today's media world.

"Mogulus adds a new and exciting dimension to Gannett's already broad-based multimedia journalism efforts. Our reporters and photographers in the field are equipped with video cameras, laptops and broadband wireless connections to enable timely and relevant news delivery to the Web," said Dubow.

The business venture is an outgrowth from Gannett's previous deal dating back to April of this year with Mogulus, whereby the company provided Gannett's web sites with broadcasting services.

The broadcasts that Gannett has been able to air include:

-The Indianapolis Star's live editorial interview of Senator Barack Obama.
-Argus Leader's live Webcast of an interview with Senator Hillary Clinton.
-AZcentral.com's Webcast of a press conference during which the NFL announced the city that will host the 2012 Super Bowl.

Max Mosley, the Formula 1 boss, has won £60,000 in his libel action against the News of the World, who accused him of taking part in a "sick Nazi orgy". Press commentators have had polarising opinions about how this landmark judgement will impact journalism in the UK.

The crux of the issue is that Mosley, 68, the son of the 1930s British fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley, sued the tabloid newspaper for grossly invading his privacy. The paper printed pictures and published video footage of him taking part in sadomasochistic sex with prostitutes in a Chelsea apartment. The paper also accused him of mocking the victims of concentration camps.

Roy Greenslade, the Guardians media blogger said: "The Max Mosley judgment won't inhibit press freedom. It might curb some of the excesses of the News of the World, but don't hold your breath. It might therefore mean that some people may avoid the humiliation he has suffered."

However, The Telegraph's Joshua Rozenburg disagrees. Rozenburg said: "Some newspapers may be able to afford paying £60,000 damages without too much difficulty. But few will want to risk legal costs of around £850,000 - the estimated total bill now payable by the News of the World. So the judgment is bound to have a chilling effect on investigative journalism. Newspapers will think twice before intruding on people's privacy."

A new law will protect journalists investigating into corruption in Russia, starting from the beginning of 2009. The law will give them the same protection as court witnesses, reported Russia Today.
 
 "We need to have a clear mechanism of legal regulation on every journalist publication. We need investigations of prosecutor's offices, and some administrative measures if they prove necessary. Only then we'll feel the feedback and reaction on the part of the authorities. And we need journalists to be protected," said Kirill Kabanov, head of the National Anti-Corruption Committee.

This comes as a significant improvement in a country that is the third deadliest in the world for reporters, after Iraq and Algeria. Around 50 journalists have been killed in over 15 years, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and many cases remain unsolved.

In what is being seen as a deliberate snub by US Presidential hopeful Barrack Obama's camp, the New Yorker's Washington correspondent has been denied a press place on Obama's tour of the Middle East and Europe.

Obama's camp have denied that it is a deliberate snub and have stated that there is simply not enough room...

This action follows on from the New Yorker's publication of a cartoon that depicted the presidential candidate and his wife, Michelle, in a "terrorist" fist-bumping gesture.

Ryan Lizza would normally have been one of the 40 correspondents on the plane.

Media blogger Rachel Sklar wrote on the Huffington Post: "So it's gonna be like that, is it? Retribution for unfavourable coverage is a chilling thing to contemplate."

Robert Murat has settled his libel action with eight British newspapers over claims he was involved in Madeleine McCain's disappearance. The Press Gazette raises an interesting point, does this win increase the pressure on journalists and Editors? Is the legal climate now worse?

Murat's action is the largest number of claims ever made against several different British media outlets in the same case. He initially launched his libel suit in April. Sky News reports that the damages total between £250,000 and £500,000.

Niri Shan, head of media at law firm Taylor Wessing said: "This was a perfectly legitimate story. The question is how can you write it in a safe way. There is a lot of pressure on newspapers now."

The Press Gazette reports that Shan went on to say that this case reflects a trend for suing several targets rather than just one. He also believes that the increasing popularity of "no-win, no fee" conditional fee agreement deals remove any financial concerns for claimants.
