When the Ann Arbor News ceases printing in July, Ann Arbor will become the first US city with no daily newspaper. The publication as it exists now will disappear completely, although a new venture, AnnArbor.com, is set to take over local news on the web and will produce a print product two days a week.

In a column for Poynter's The Biz Blog, Rick Edmunds postulates on what factors led to the decline of the News in Ann Arbor, whose vibrant, educated community would appear to be the ideal location for a newspaper. Edmunds even goes so far as to suggest starting over with AnnArbor.com might not be such a bad idea.

"The future of online writers and journalism in the Gulf is very uncertain," said Saudi radio journalist Samar Fatany. Fatany arrived at this conclusion based on the outcome of a workshop organized by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) to address the challenges of mainstream media in the Gulf.

At the workshop, Gulf online writers, journalists and media professionals from Malaysia, Eastern Europe and the United States (such as senior newsroom editor of the Huffington Post) gathered to debate the role of new forms of media that are changing and reshaping public debate and discussed how to generate more revenue online. The date and location of the event is not disclosed in the article written by Fatany posted on Al Arabiya.com.

The American Press Institute prepared a report for last week's newspaper executives' meeting in Chicago in which it assessed the options for paid content and "fair use" fees from Google and other aggregators. Entitled Newspaper Economic Action Plan, the report concluded that newspapers "can make the leap from an advertising-centered to an audience-centered enterprise," and should do so as soon as possible.

The "integrated, five-point" plan provides "models and recommendations for the migration of online content from free to paid" which are "intended for the development of consensus, protocols and technology." The API does not see paid content as the only revenue source that will save journalism, but advocates establishing "a true value for news content online by charging for it" in the first part of its plan: the True Value Doctrine. It recommends that news organisations immediately start a "massive" period of experimentation to find the best way to do this. The report explores three options: micropayments, subscriptions and a hybrid model.

In the run-up to the US mid-term elections, many news organizations have been using interactives in their website coverage, and often taking advantage of Flash technology to do it.  Are these graphics effective?  Are they worth all the trouble?  Digital media experts Alberto Cairo, Mindy McAdams and Laura Ruel give their assessment, and offer tips for future news website content producers.

With all this talk about ethical lapses in photojournalism, one thing is clear: it is easier to pledge yourself to a value system than it is to live by one, especially in a fiercely competitive, mercurial industry.  Such is the environment facing the code of ethics proposed by the US-based Society for News Design (SND) earlier this year.  For, although commendable, I can’t help wondering how it is going to trickle down to the newspapers and websites who need it most.

 

Last month in Moscow, the Russian Guild of Press Publishers held the First Russian Publishers Conference.  During the Press Freedom Seminar, President of the World Editors Forum and Saturday Editor of The Times (London), George Brock, gave a talk discussing the freedom of the press in Russia, whose text is posted below. 

An article by Katharine Q. Seelye in the New York Times reports that over the past year, many journalists have been receiving an anonymous email message citing positive facts of the Iraq war not reported on by the media. The note provoked a discussion at a meeting of editors of papers who are members of the Associated Press, the association that most American papers turn to for their Iraq news. They agreed that their public doesn't feel that they're getting the whole story which has been lacking in more in-depth accounts of what's happening, but that at the same time it is very difficult to report in Iraq due to the obvious dangers of war. To cure these ill public perceptions, managing editor of the AP, Mike Silverman said that the AP planned on including a summary of the situation by one of their correspondents every ten days and that it would try to include more reporting from journalists entrenched with soldiers. This last effort, however, will pose a problem seeing as the number of reporters living with soldiers has been reduced from 700 two years ago to about 50 today. Another general perception is that news on Iraq is too negative. In the view of some, the media has been avoiding stories of accomplishment that the public is hearing from returned military personnel. But one editor that attended the AP meeting felt that this was normal even on a local level where "we're more likely to focus on people who are killed than on the positive news out of school."

It begins strong and from page to page, it's even stronger: "We are at the beginning of a golden age of journalism — but it is not journalism as we have known it. Media futurists have predicted that by 2021, "citizens will produce 50 percent of the news peer-to-peer."
