The Hong Kong Economic Journal and Hong Kong Economic Times, the two largest Chinese-language business newspapers, have launched paid websites.

The Economic Times recently revamped its online and mobile services to attract more readers. Subscribers can now view entire pages of the newspaper and subscribers - who pay HKD350 (USD45) a year - have access to real-time market news and analysis, newspaper content, archives for the past three years, amongst other things.

The Economic Journal has attracted more than 8,000 registered subscribers since it launched in July. 7,000 joined in the early-bird registration campaign, paying HKD398 for a year's online access. The special early subscripton offer was closed last week and the prixce for subscription now HKD598. As an added inticement, the wall-respected Mr Cho column was also made available and a year of his archived articles. Subscribers need to pay HKD248 a year for access to Mr Cho's archive.

China's second-biggest phone operator, China Unicom, announced that it would use Celltick's LiveScreen Media technology to provide mobile content, starting from the first day of the Olympic Games.

Celltick, headquartered in the UK, will provide technology that will act as a content management platform as well as manage mobile advertising, reported Haaretz.com.

The services offered include up-to-date information about the Games from the primary Chinese news source, Xinhua News, as well as business, fashion and entertainment news, according to CNews.

In addition to that, users will get invitations to watch videos on their phones, wrote The Haartz. The service will be offered in both English and Chinese.

The technology allows multimedia content and advertising to reach a practically unlimited amount of users, reported CNews.

The LiveScreen Media application will be embedded onto SIM cards that are distributed in China Unicom retail outlets throughout Beijing.

In the days after the 61st World Newspaper Congress and 15th World Editors Forum, the debate was still raging:
Will print products remain the core business model of the newspaper industry in the long-term?
Will digital platforms become newspapers' primary source of distribution and revenue?
Or will both print and digital work side by side to sustain newspaper journalism?
Guardian Comment is Free columnist Roy Greenslade and World Association of Newspaper CEO Timothy Balding sounded off on the topic.

Greenslade struck first. Having attended the conference, he pointed to what he considered a divide between publishers and editors and their respective conference programs; "The congress, the publishers' conference, was dominated by the upbeat statistics about the good health of newspaper sales, newspaper launches and newspaper profits"... "Yet all the discussions at the editors' forum were dominated by how to deal with the decline - whether rapid or gradual - of newspaper circulations and the accompanying flight of advertising as people turn their backs on newsprint in favour of the internet."

Balding responded by noting that, on the whole, global newspaper industry figures are positive. Circulations are up in 105 nations and stable in 31. Paid titles are up in 85 countries and stable in 83. But this doesn't stop at print. The Congress, Balding pointed out, gave many examples of traditional publishers succeeding in the digital realm and shared multimedia strategies with their colleagues from around the world. WAN continues to do "absolutely everything we can to make sure that our publishers and our editors receive the best and most reliable information about digital developments and the best success stories on their successful exploitation," said Balding. The association does not "pretend... to know the digital future."

Perhaps the real divide comes not from the publishers and editors at the World Newspaper Congress, but rather from developed and developing nations. It is no surprise that in the United States and many countries in Western Europe, print newspapers are experiencing declines in circulation and profit margins. These papers have had trouble making up for lost revenues on the Web. On the other hand, newspapers in developing countries such as India and China are witnessing huge growth and will continue to do so for years to come. Their digital offerings and revenues will also increase as Internet and mobile penetration rapidly spread.

The essence of the Congress, is to bring papers from these nations together. It is the platform where they share ideas; new ways to create and distribute content, strategies for reaching new audiences, and creative ways to make money in print and online. And sharing ideas between different markets will ensure that the newspaper industry, in both developing and developed nations, will continue to flourish.

The free business daily paper City AM in London is launching Quick Response (QR) technology, which enables readers to download financial news on their mobile phones.

When a picture of a QR code is taken from a mobile phone, the QR code provides a link to the mobile Internet referring to specific news pages.

City AM claims to be the first newspaper in the UK to make us of QR technology.

These codes have already been extensively used in Japan and China. In France, several magazines successfully tried using the smart barcodes last summer.

City AM already provides a 'mobizine', a mobile-friendly format for its news service.

The world had real-time news about China's massive earthquake as victims dashed out "twitter" text messages while it took place, in what was being touted Tuesday as micro-blogging outshining mainstream news.

That is the lead of Glenn Chapman's China Earthquake report for AFP.

Twitter is being used by more media groups both as a channel to distribute breaking news alerts as well as as a way to monitor fluid news events like disasters and elections.

Do you Twitter?

Twitter is a Web service that allows people to post short messages to update their friends about what they are doing - in 140 characters or less. Why would you want to do that? Twitter is geared for mobile and you can read updates and post with your mobile phone, your blog or via Web browser. You can also direct message friends, control your notifications on a friend-by-friend case and much more. To try it for a month is to know it.

Why does this matter?

IM is a method of communication that came from the underground, teenagers. Understand that a generation of teenagers have used their AIM "Away Messages" to update their buddies about what they were doing or where to meet next. Short message updates is a normal dialogue mode for this demo group and Twitter picks up on that behavior and makes the IM practice more practical, and powerful. We read stories now all the time about how younger people get their news from their friends. And when they do, they often get that news through status updates and the passing of Web links. I have dabbled with my Twitter account (Follow me!) over the last six months and have found it to be a useful way to connect with my global community of peers. For example, the most recent posts shown below are from my twitter stream (using a twitter widget that gives me the programming code to place into my post here)

 

Instant, means breaking, mobile means everywhere in the world.

Like AIM (Or any other Instant Message service) Twitter lets you update your 'AWAY MESAGE" or PRESENT STATUS" and invite your inner group of friend to "Follow" you anytime, anywhere. (You can share your micro reports either publicly or privately.) And when big news events happen, the local twitter community instantly become the eyes and ears on the scene. Some people predict Twitter will become the next Facebook phenom. It is fun and has real potential as a source as we start to get more journalists to understand the service and how people are using it. One thing that makes the service extra useful is that Twitter give you tools to put your tweets in your blog or any Web site.

Your blog or news site can post Tweets as well

You don't have to use the service to post micro thoughts as it was designed - you can have your blog feed into your Twitter stream as well. (I use Twitterfeed for this) And, if you wish, you can also get a widget that will show the updates from all the people and blogs who follow your Twitter feed. For example: Here are latest updates ( or "Tweets") from followers in the Visual Editors community.

 

 

Now, if you cruise that list of 'tweets' every now and then, you just might learn something or hear of a breaking news event ahead of everyone else.

So who wants to "Follow me?"

CNN will not modify its content or train its journalists for mobile phones in the near future, according to an announcement from Laurel Chamberlain, director of digital media for news at Turner Media, at the DNA 2008 conference.

"There are always ways of looking at how we can condense what we put onto mobile, but at this stage I don't think its necessary," Chamberlain said.

CNN also ruled the possibility experimenting even preliminarily with mobile news. "Maybe in another five years when we are only thinking about the mobile space," Chamberlain said.

Other news organizations around the world have begun experimenting with mobile news, including the Manchester Evening News and the China-based China Daily. Reuters too has struck a business deal with Nokia for its mobile journalism ventures.

Moreover News International is currently developing a system to measure mobile content traffic. The Sun, The Times, and News of the World are among the publications participating in the Leadership in Mobile plan, which aims to implement the measurement system, and provide media organizations with accurate mobile traffic figures.

Certainly mobile phones are becoming better equipped to handle mobile content, but the jury is still out if 3G capabilities will actually translate to widespread viewing of mobile content.

Mobile news has its proponents, with some arguing that it is the future of news. Other media organizations, however, are not so sure. CNN clearly doesn't view mobile news as necessity. The Daily Mirror gave it a go, and opted in January to pull its mobile site.

At this juncture, its unclear if mobile news advocates are wasting their time, or if its critics are missing the boat. Only time will tell if mobile news becomes the next big trend, or goes the way of virtual newspapers.

China Mobile and China Daily have launched the world’s first English-Chinese language mobile newspaper. China Daily Mobile News sends multilingual news to users’ cell phones.

China Daily Mobile News is sent to users twice in the day, morning and evening. Each multimedia issue contains 20 pieces of news including top news, business, odd news, health, cartoons and more.

Target users include foreign officials, members of foreign companies, white collar workers, college students and more.

In January, China Daily won the rights to publish the official English language newspaper in China about the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Mobile news has reportedly been very successful in China, as was already the case in 2005. In March 2007, the People’s Daily launched a mobile version in Beijing – 160,000 people had subscribed to its trial version in the Guangdong province alone.

The intense competition between the ten newspapers that vie for the same audience in Beijing has caused a drop in ad revenue as a result of the overcrowded market. As a response, Beijing Daily Newspaper Group’s Beijing Daily Messenger relaunched as Beijing’s first free publication distributed on the metro.

Google has announced its new software that will be used to power and enhance the use of the web on mobile phones. "This is going to bring the internet into cell phones in a very cool way," Andy Rubin, Google's director of mobile platforms, told the Associated Press news agency.

On July 1, blognation launched in the UK and became the first portal in an ambitious project to cover developments in Web 2.0 on a global scale.

Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist serving a 10-year prison sentence for revealing his government’s orders to newspapers to censor their reporting of the Tiananmen Square massacre anniversary, has been awarded the 2007 Golden Pen of Freedom, the annual press freedom prize from the World Association of Newspapers.

In this section, John Zogby, CEO of Zogby International, and Jeff Jarvis, new media proponent and founder of Buzzmachine, comment on the results of the Newsroom Barometer. Both found that editors’ optimism and open-mindedness to new media was a clear indication that newspapers were embracing the digital revolution, yet Jarvis fears that may not be enough…

The Chinese People’s Daily has just launched its mobile version in Beijing, which should prove to be a big success. In the Guangdong province alone, 160,000 users subscribed to the mobile service during the trial period.

Chinese newspapers, in the wake of a study by public relations firm Edelman, are seeking ways to become more trustworthy sources for their readers – by engaging in more of a dialogue. But will they do so by reforming print content, or by switching to platforms the public trusts?

Maurice Lévy , CEO of one of the world’s top advertising agencies, Publicis, recently sat down with the Financial Times to chat about the state of the media. Since being appointed CEO in 1988, Lévy, has been known for his aggressive international expansion plans for his company, including acquisitions such as Saatchi & Saatchi in 2000.
