Malaysia: two broadsheets switch to tabloid format

Posted by Andrea Steinberg on April 22, 2005 at 3:26 PM

The Asia Pacific Post reports that two of Malaysia’s oldest newspapers, the New Straits Times and the New Sunday Times, officially terminated their broadsheet printing after 160 years and switched instead to a tabloid format. New versions of the two papers were launched on April 17th as compacts half the size of the previous broadsheet. The NST was the first Asian paper to simultaneously offer both broadsheet and compact versions starting late last year. NST editor-in-chief Kalimullah Hassan said that the introduction of NST’s compact version reversed more than a decade-long decline in newspaper sales.
