The New York Times strikes a deal with Topix.net

Found on MarketWatch and siliconvalley.com: At the beginning of February, Topix.net, which produced a first-time profit in December, made a deal with The New York Times in which the Times pays the internet startup to feature its headlines in certain sections. Most of the Times' headlines have to do with New York and will be published at the top of 80 Topix categories. "This is significant because even if you are the biggest and best newspaper on the Web, you still want to increase your audience,'' said Topix CEO Rich Skrenta. So much for a recent posting about Topix stealing business from sites that require registration, at least concerning the Times.
