"How could a business that was so stable and profitable for 150 years go into such a rapid tailspin?" Paul Gillin asks on his blog Newspaper Death Watch - which vies, perhaps hastily, for the death of the newspaper industry. According to him, in the post-Watergate era, US newspapers excessively focused on chasing Pulitzer prizes, thus diminishing their much-needed local coverage.

Wall Street Journal editor Paul Steiger's 2007 farewell piece puts the start of the decline in the post-Watergate period when journalists began to revel in excess, refusing to travel any other way beside first-class, and according to Gillin, "Steiger's piece makes it clear that newspapers fumbled the opportunity to get out front of the Internet by focusing too much on protecting their print franchises."

Eric Alterman's recent article in The New Yorker adds that papers lost their focus on local journalism and their readers during post-Watergate as well. Papers edged towards increased impartiality, and the scramble to win Pulitzers to duplicate the Washington Post's Watergate success cost newspapers millions of dollars on large Washington bureaus and overseas correspondents.

Another trend that began in the 1970's was the rise of the "insider journalist." In Gillin's view, reporters became celebrities with access to powerful people, who learned "to exploit their access to leading journalists for their own gain as well."

According to Gillin, newspapers didn't make any changes because they had healthy and predictable profit margins, and their investors were happy. However, most big companies, according to Gillin, "often enjoy their most profitable years just before the undertow of market change sucks them under."

Gillin's concludes that "it's too late for the newspaper industry to save itself."  He forsees massive consolidations, more layoffs and the emergence  a new form journalism which uses blogs, camera phones, Twitter, wikis, hyperlinks, and search engines.

But although the newspaper industry may have been slow to transition to embrace new media formats, it is actively doing so now, through blogs, social networks, multimedia projects and the inclusion of readers in the news process. Up to them to prove Gillin wrong.

It has been said that journalism schools have been lagging behind in their adaptation to new media and the rapid evolution of journalism (flashback: in 1995, a publication by the Society of Professional Journalists contended journalists’ new media skills were “nice, but not necessary.”). This is starting to change though – or is it? What should tomorrow’s journalists be learning? Jeff Jarvis, Roy Greenslade, and Keith Woods from the Poynter Institute describe their own experiences for the Weblog.

The Society of Newspaper Designs and IFRA recently organized three days of citizen journalism workshops in Kuala Lumpur, with participants arriving from across Central and Southeast Asia.  Speakers, including Steve Yelvington, Robb Montgomery, and Kevin Anderson highlighted the growing trend of citizen media and its potential for improving mainstream media.

Founder of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales claims that newspaper websites should use wikis as a vital tool to post news that wouldn’t conventionally be published. And European online news aggregator Wikio just secured over $5 million in funding.

Wired News has launched an experiment with Wikis, the technology that allows anybody to edit and contribute to an online text. The tech-focused magazine has posted an article about the wiki phenomenon in wiki format to be scrutinized and modified by readers. If all turns out well, the collaborative article will be published in the September 7 print version of the weekly.

Columbia University’s Eli Noam stirred up some curiosity in the media industry in 2005 prophesizing that newspapers will evolve into “news integrators.” That curiosity was sated at the 13th World Editors forum where Noam made the keynote speech.

In keeping with the theme of the “free generation”, the bearded academic reflected on Rupert Murdoch’s now famous speech at the American Society of Newspaper Editors in April 2005, saying that “Young people are not abandoning print. They are abandoning news.” In this respect, newspapers must undergo a “structural transformation” if they are to thrive in the digital age. 

Mark Glaser, "industry expert and longtime new media commentator", is to host a new digital media blog called Media Shift, which will "offer a continuing look at how digital media such as blogs, RSS, podcasts, citizen journalism, wikis, news aggregators and video repositories are altering the way we live, play and work."
