Taking an open-source approach to community journalism
Mid-July, we were surprised by the "community journalism" initiative of the Bakersfield Californian and called The Northwest Voice (directed by Mary Lou Fulton). Today, a new weblog just opens to clarify the goals and the results: "Welcome to Open Source Journalism, a site documenting a new approach to community journalism being developed at The Bakersfield Californian. Read more about our publication, The Northwest Voice... Here's some recent news about what we've been up to, and the movement in general. In May 2004, a community weekly newspaper and Web site serving Northwest Bakersfield made its debut. This new product, The Northwest Voice, combines a traditional model (a community weekly newspaper) with a new approach to content (have the community to contribute most of the content via the Web.) Get started with an overview of The Northwest Voice. You can also learn about our business plan, content strategy, marketing strategy and more." Very helpful indeed for who wants to develop community journalism in his country.
