Average time spent per visit decreased for more than half of the top 30 global news websites in May compared to last year, according to the latest Nielsen data. The trend mirrors the drops seen at the top newspaper sites.

The biggest gains came from two non-traditional news sources. Google News upped the average time spent on its site to over 22 minutes, a gain of over ten minutes from May 2008. Similarly, the average visitor stayed on the Huffington Post for about 15 minutes, an increase of more than six minutes.

Seventeen of the top 30 US newspaper websites showed a decline in the average time users spent on their sites in May versus the same period last year, according to an exclusive article in Editor & Publisher. The data come from Nielson Online, which keeps track of the most widely read newspaper sites based on number of unique visitors.

On the bright side, that means nearly half of the sites posted gains year-over-year, some of them fairly significant. The Star Tribune of Minneapolis, a paper struggling to get out of bankruptcy, added 20 minutes to the time readers spend on the site - at an average of over 47 minutes per user, it's also the newspaper site that users stay on the longest. The San Francisco Chronicle and SFGate.com also recorded sizeable gains, jumping to 21 minutes this year compared to 12 minutes in May 2008.

Adding credence to the notion that more than ever people are relying on the Internet as their primary source of news, the latest poll by Zogby International shows a majority of Americans view the web as the best source of information. When presented with a scenario in which they had to choose only one source of news, 56% of adults picked the Internet.

Where Americans are getting their news on the web is striking. Nearly half said the web sites of national newspapers are important and 43% said the same for national TV sites. Internet-only operations fared much worse. Less than 30% stated that blogs that shared their political views were important, and just 14% said the same for blogs with the opposite political view. And social networking sites? Forget it. Ten percent of adults named Facebook as an important source of news, and a mere 4% said the same of Twitter.

The Nielsen Company has carried out a 52-nation online survey on whether media coverage of the impending recession was adequate. The general consensus among consumers was that the media did not sufficiently inform the public, according to Nielsen Business Media writer Kenneth Hein.

In every region except Latin America, the percent of people who agreed or strongly agreed that media coverage was inadequate outnumbered those who disagreed by 2-to-1. Consumers were most dissatisfied in Europe and North America, with 48 and 51% respectively agreeing that coverage was inadequate. These are the areas which have been hit hardest by the current crisis.

Despite some of the hysteria and hype emanating from global coverage of the swine flu outbreak, a Pew Research survey has found that in the US, "the level of coverage was relatively moderate when matched up against the number of confirmed U.S. cases." Comparing the top three newspapers in the US between April 27th and May 10th produced a figure of one swine flu story per 225 cases in the US, less coverage than Canada, Spain, New Zealand, France and China. In Mexico, where the disease originated, there was one story for every 81 cases.

The survey revealed that there was no direct correlation between the number of cases and the extent of coverage - China, for example had very few confirmed cases, but had front page coverage equal to that of the US, which had 2000. It also pointed out that French paper Le Figaro was simultaneously restrained and controversial in its coverage, running just two stories on its front pages, but causing controversy with its description of the disease as 'Mexican flu'.

Advertising Age, an online resource of the news on media and marketing, has concluded that "Print is not aging well. Or, rather, its readers are aging rapidly."  The statement is based on the latest research on the newspaper and magazine industries, conducted by Mediamark Research for Spring 2009.

The research focused on ascertaining the average age of the readership of papers and magazines.  The findings, given the large amount of attention paid to the inexorable rise of digital sources of information- generally thought of as catering to a younger user base, are hardly surprising: readers of the print are getting older.

According to a recent poll just out, media employees count amongst England's heaviest drinkers.A survey carried out by the Department of Health found that media professionals drank about twice as much as the recommended allowance - an average of 44 units per week, instead of the suggested 21-28 units for men (depending on build), and 14-21 units for women. This is the equivalent of more than 4 bottles of wine or more than 19 pints of beer.

After three weeks of personal experimentation with a Kindle e-reader, a Poynter writer has seen it fit to hail the gadget as a component of the "hybrid future of the news".  Bill Mitchell concluded that the Kindle would function as a third platform in his personal reading of the news, alongside printed and online forms, "I see the Kindle (and other e-readers) more as a supplement to print and online as opposed to a substitute for either."

Indeed, Mitchell's relatively positive testimony of the product, whilst not an explicit endorsement, is an interesting contribution to the current hot debate surrounding the relationship of devices such as the Kindle with the beleaguered print industry and online news sites, the latter being currently embroiled in the pay for viewing controversy.

It would seem that student newspapers in the UK are beset by the same problems as their mainstream counterparts - perhaps even more so. According to a survey by the Leeds Student newspaper, over 45% of UK student newspapers have had to cut their print run or cancel issues, 60% haven't hit their advertising target for the year, and over 25% of their editors "have serious concerns about their financial future."

A similar situation from a different perspective on the other side of the Atlantic: a Bloomberg report claims that the outgoing writers and editors of student publication the Harvard Crimson rarely end up at newspapers. Moreover, those current employees with journalistic ambitions "avoid mentioning it in front of classmates, wanting to avoid expressions of concern, if not ridicule" according to Abigail Phillip, 20, a junior editor at the Crimson.

Writer Beth Teitell doesn't think the serious impact the (theoretical) demise of newspapers would have upon society is being communicated to the public in quite the right way. Citing a Pew survey which found that just 33% of Americans would personally miss reading their local newspapers "a lot", she writes in the Boston Globe that, "No one cares about the sanctity of the news. We need to make the case on grounds that actually matter to people." How does Teitell propose to alert people to the problem? By letting them know how their lives would really look without newspapers.

How would kidnappers write ransom notes, she muses? Or how would people wrap up valuable china during a house move? "Let the papers die, and your tableware goes down, too." Try covering your head with your iPhone during a rainstorm, she challenges - let alone the impact on papier-mâché "when your kid's homework assignment calls for making a model of Earth or an erupting volcano." It is doubtful how successful these arguments would be as part of a campaign to save newspapers, but they are entertaining nonetheless - along the same lines as a newspaper using flavoured ink and front page nudity to win back readers perhaps...

Arizona's oldest community newspaper, the Tucson Citizen, finally printed its last edition on Saturday with the headline: "Our epitaph". Owner Gannett Co. had initially threatened to close the newspaper back in March, bu this was delayed when two potential buyers came forward. Unfortunately, negotiations fell through and unable to find a buyer, Gannett has proceeded with the closure.

The Economist has made the news industry the special focus of its business section for its latest edition. "Established" news is described as "being blown away" but news in general is otherwise considered to be "thriving."

In an opening paragraph which does not bode well for advocates of traditional media, the Economist ponders if "the surest sign that newspapers are doomed is that politicians, so often their targets, are beginning to feel sorry for them," in reference to Barack Obama's pledge to newspapers last weekend at an industry dinner in Washington, as well as Massachusetts senator, John Kerry's commitment to help the "endangered species" and, in particular, his region's beloved Boston Globe.

75% of newspaper editors surveyed by the Associated Press Managing Editors (APME) said "their ability to inform readers has diminished with their steadily shrinking staffs," according to an article which appeared on both the APME and San Francisco Chronicle website.

Responses from 351 editors were collected for the 20-question survey, where some newspapers had more than one editor participate. 66% of editors worked for newspapers with a daily circulation of less than 50,000; 27.5% had 50,000 to 250,000; and 6.5% had a distribution of more than 250,000 copies.

A new report produced by the publishing arm of PricewaterhouseCoopers - the world's largest professional services company - in conjunction with the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), examines the outlook for newspapers as they seek to realign themselves within a digital framework and minimise the impact of the global recession.

The study identifies interactivity, specialisation and new business models as being key to ensuring the survival of the newspaper in an online age.

Ever since news got out regarding Amazon's intention to launch a new and bigger e-reader, eyebrows have been raised across the news business. Many have claimed that the new Kindle, Amazon's e-reader, could save newspapers: analysts are suspicious of these claims.

Brian Caulfield is especially adamant about it when he compares the Kindle to the iPhone. Admitting it is kind of like comparing apples to oranges, he says the Kindle is still too focused on old media, while the iPhone provides access to information across all kinds of mediums.

A large proportion of the discussion and innovation with regards to monetise newspapers' online content has come out of the United States, possibly unsurprisingly considering the intensity of the economic downturn there, and arguably the American entrepreneurial spirit. But the US is not alone in its contemplation of the issue, which could potentially 'save' newspapers, and the Editors Weblog took a look at the situation in France and the ideas that are emerging, based on two recent studies.

Masters student Matthieu de Vivie carried out a major research project entitled "Can online news be profitable?" in which he analysed the sectors' sources of income, along with debates that have taken place on French media blogs over the past few months. The Institute of Audio-visuals and Telecommunications in Europe (IDATE), a market analysis and consulting firm, has produced several reports on online strategies for the press.

The French situation

In France, printing and distribution costs are high, partly due to state regulation and to a very powerful printing union, meaning that print profits tend to be lower. However, papers do benefit from much public aid, and this was increased in January when president Nicolas Sarkozy offered the press a 600million euro bailout. Many media outlets are owned by groups which do not actually specialise in media, but are looking for "prestige and influence within it," according to de Vivie. He gives financial daily Les Echos as an example, which is owned by Bernard Arnault, LVMH. Groups such as Dassault which owns national daily Le Figaro, or Lagardere which owns the magazine Paris Match, Journal du Dimanche and part of Le Monde, have leaders who are friends with Sarkozy. Many journalists have protested at what they see as threats to the independence of their papers.

Related to this issue of possible government influence, the French press is suffering from a lack of reader confidence, similar to that in the US. A 2008 survey showed that 46% of people did not believe a large part of what they read in newspapers. The Internet has "done away with journalists' monopoly over the production of information," states de Vivie. The increased presence of other fonts of information and aggregators has encouraged people to look far and wide for news, as in other countries.

De Vivie concluded that today, it would be impossible for a major French newspaper to survive online-only, due to the abundance of information available online and weak advertising revenue. IDATE's reports also suggest that traditional advertising is not going to support a newspaper on its own. So what are the options for newspapers as their readers migrate online?

Charging readers

The most basic option is to charge readers for online content, as newspapers have done in print for many decades. IDATE believes that the pay wall model is extremely limited. However, leading newspaper Le Monde seems to have successfully adopted a part-paid, part-free model online. It is a rare feat for a general interest paper, at least compared to the English-speaking world, where only financial giants such as the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal seem to have accomplished this. Articles are free for three days after publication, after which they go behind a pay wall. They can then be purchased individually, or basic and premium subscriptions are available, the premium option including access to digital copies of the print paper. Subscriptions represented about 35% of LeMonde.fr's revenue, while advertising accounts for 65%, according to figures obtained by de Vivie in November 2008. LeMonde.fr still has high readership, suggesting that the site's traffic has not been damaged too much by the pay wall, and that the model makes sense.

De Vivie also looks at French site Mediapart, a participatory, paid venture without advertising, launched in 2008 but Edwy Plenel, a former Le Monde editor. It is free to read other citizen participation, but a subscription gives users the right to write articles or leave comments, and to read articles from the Mediapart team. The site, however had not captured its target number of subscribers in 2008.

Alternatives to advertising?

But if papers do not succeed in persuading users to pay for their news: what are the other options? In terms of advertising, the Internet has allowed new measures to develop, as well as the CPM, pay-per-click and pay-per-action rates offer a more accurate assessment of an advertisement's effectiveness. It also allows for targeted advertising, however this is not much used in France. CPMs are also considerably lower in France than in the UK or US: according to de Vivie, a CPM of $10 is considered good in France, compared to $30 elsewhere. Part of this is due to lower investment in advertising, as well as lower Internet penetration.

IDATE's report on the future of the press considers below-the-line advertising as "essential" for a newspaper's online advertising strategy, and also recommends e-commerce as a distinct possibility: "the media now have the opportunity of developing into veritable media stores by incorporating e-commerce offers into their editorial content. IDATE suggests that newspapers form alliances with book sellers to market the books that they review, or with ticket sellers to market plays or other events. Another option is to get involved with products that target a newspapers' readership, such as the Wall Street Journal's partnership with Wine.com. The Lagardere group has signed an agreement with Sumitomo, a Japanese leader in online commerce. The firm sees advertising and e-commerce as the main revenue streams from mobile news, rather than making users or telecoms operators pay for content.

De Vivie also believes that for larger media groups, diversifying online can be profitable. He cites the example of the Washington Post's ownership of profitable education service Kaplan Inc. which he feels "is allowing the Washington Post to survive." The French Le Figaro group includes numerous commercial websites such as Evene, Sport24, Cadremploi, BazarChic ou TickeTac, which represent "an important source of revenue." LeFigaro.fr is not currently profitable but it has an important audience. One of the problems with such a strategy, however, is that it risks diluting the brand's value, which is already a fear of many papers as reading habits change online.

Potential of online-only

De Vivie is does see some potential in online-only sites, but only in certain conditions. Firstly, he believes that small "supple" organisations which offer content with significant added value, focussed on specific niches and gathering a large community, are a good approach. "This equilibrium is nonetheless precarious," he added, particularly in France where advertising brings in less revenue than in the US and it is often necessary to develop alternative sources of income.

One French success story is Rue89, which combines the skills of journalists with the knowledge of experts and the participation of citizens. Amateur contributions are checked and edited by the site's reporters. De Vivie explains that the site quickly acquired "strong journalistic credibility," offering exclusive stories and investigations. He estimates that the site could quite feasibly become profitable, especially as Rue89 does not make all of its income from advertising, but also develops websites for others, which makes up an estimated one third of its revenue. He believes that other online players also have potential to break even, due to their low fixed costs and overheads.

The impression that emerges from the studies is that online news has great potential and possibilities continue to evolve. It is therefore advisable that newspapers continue to innovate and do not resign themselves to relying on print income for as long as possible.  

In the new Innovations in Newspapers 2009 World Report, Rupert Murdoch said newspapers will succeed depending on the relationships they develop with their readers, regardless of how news is delivered. The Innovation International Media Consulting Group released the annual survey today (27 April) for the World Association of Newspapers.

The Wall Street Journal monthly columnist, Mark Penn, has today written a startling article analysing the growing trend of the professional blogger.

Together with his co-author from book Microtrends: The Small Forces Behind Tomorrow's Big Changes - E. Kinney Zalesne - Penn reports that there are almost as many people in the United States earning a living as a blogger as there are lawyers. What's more, Penn and Zalesne claim that the Bureau of Labor Statistics, has identified 452,000 Americans working as full-time bloggers, suggesting there are more bloggers than there are bartenders, computer programmers, CEOs or firefighters (although a scan of the data unveiled no such magical figure when we checked).

Yesterday, the Australian reported that following a period of sustained economic growth peaking at the end of 2008, India's newspapers are beginning to show signs of economic retreat, with advertising revenue falling by unprecedented amounts.

With economic retardation sweeping the world, emerging markets are also beginning to suffer as foreign investment dries up but printing costs continue rising. "Newspaper sizes are coming down, staff are being retrenched, marginal titles closed and expansion plans put on hold," reports the Australian.

The call for multi talented journalists and more multimedia news coverage just got higher as Thomson Reuters journalists are to be armed with a portable multimedia suite they call "studio in a suitcase". The kit includes a video camera, microphone, lights, tripod and monitor.  As citizens all over the world are increasingly equipped with all kinds of gadgets that can collect news, journalists are needing to be just as prepared, and even less specialized in one area.

According to Pew's State of the News Media 2009 report, the younger demographic, between 18-24 and 25-34 have the lowest levels of daily newspaper readership and 49% said they get their news online. Yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg, owner and founder of Facebook, announced the 200 millionth active user on the networking site, one third of which are in the young age group that has limited exposure to news on a regular basis. That said, there are two new experiments in action to get the news to young Facebook users: mndaily.com and Hot Dish. Both efforts are funded by the Knight Foundation and are powered by NewsCloud, a news sharing website.

The International Journalism Festival took place in Perugia, Italy from April 1-5. The festival addressed the differences between old and new media and the necessity to integrate the two, and many other widely discussed issues affecting the media today, such as integrating print and web news in light of readers' migration online, the necessity to finance journalism as a watchdog, and hence the need to make readers pay for online news.

Following negative press coverage of his diplomatic gaffes at the recent G20 and Nato summits, Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi appears to have threatened journalists with reprisals, even implying that he is considering a government-inspired boycott. The most reported faux pas were skipping an official Nato photo and snubbing German Chancellor Angela Merkel by finishing a mobile phone conversation while she waited to greet him, and shouting out to Barack Obama during a photo call at Buckingham Palace, causing the Queen to look round in annoyance.

Speaking to reporters in Prague on Saturday, Berlusconi accused journalists of "defaming me and misinforming readers," and claimed that the Italian press had "no other aim than that of saying the prime minister has committed faux pas or gaffes." He seemed to threaten a news blackout: "I will no longer talk to you... I will no longer give news conferences," and went so far as to admit that he was tempted to call for "direct and tough action towards certain newspapers and members of the press." When asked to explain further he warned, "If I say 'don't watch a TV channel' or something, do you think that no one in Italy would follow me?"

A Pew survey found recently that many online journalists are worried that with the rise of the Internet, journalistic values are changing. The majority showed they think journalists are being less prudent, working faster and losing their clout. The most recent questioning of these changes was in an article by Regina McCombs, on April 1, in which she casts doubt on the presence of music in photojournalism projects.

The main dilemma lies in the fact that music usually creates an emotional pull in a story. If journalists use music is it still journalism or is it now an opinionated work of art? "The problem is not that music doesn't work, it's that it works too well," said Al Tompkins, Poynter's broadcast and online group leader. The temptation to use music is hard to ignore, it adds a whole other level to a story, but is it the correct level?
