Since current digital laws in the US are "inadequate attempts" to import rules from a bygone period, TechCrunch proposes that a Digital Bill of Rights be put in place, in order to know "what freedoms and rights consumers can expect from Internet service providers, content companies, device manufacturers, and the government itself."

From TechCrunch, the suggestions for the Bill include:

-The Right to Use and Reuse Content: Updating the principle of fair use so that it is balanced enough that copyright holders may still benefit financially from their material.

-The Right To Control Digital Property On Your Own Device: Digital property may sometimes be linked to a specific device like an iPhone or a Kindle e-reader, which Apple or Amazon can extract from a user without notice or permission.

-The Right To The Free Flow Of Information: Censorship may occur if there are "artificial" boundaries regarding digital data flow and Internet service providers shouldn't discriminate against information based on its data type.

-The Right To (Some) Privacy: While the concept of privacy may not be apparent online, important information (i.e.bank account number, social security number) must be protected. Furthermore physical and digital privacy laws aren't consistent.

-The Right to Control Your Digital Identity: Users should be the sole owners of their online identity and advertising networks on the Web shouldn't abuse it.

Philip M. Stone confronts a problem in his column for FollowTheMedia.com, the problem of the additional digital revenue earned from news web sites not covering the analog dollars lost by print products. Stone considers a solution: he advocates running additional web sites that have nothing to do with news but that can attract the real masses and hopefully new advertisers - such as social networking sites for the local community? This is what Mecom are doing.

David Montgomery, Mecom executive chairman, is convinced that newspaper companies need to make more than just the price of a newspaper from its readers.

"We are launching new websites at a rate of one a week," Montgomery said as his company announced disappointing results for the first half of the year. "A single copy of a newspaper per customer is no longer adequate. We have got to provide media in as many different forms as possible"

In his Digital Deliverance blog, Vin Crosbie outlines his arguments, predicting that numerous US newspapers would go out of business in the future because print is dying, with regional papers folding in first, and that the industry will go through a "gray age."

Advertisers aren't the "primary customers" of papers. Readers are the "root of the business", because readers appeal to advertisers who will in turn bring profits to newspapers.

Crosbie mentions that the declining newspaper industry isn't cyclical. The situation might not necessarily get better in the future, The Guardian blogger Roy Greenslade points out.

Britain's newspaper industry may reach the same tumultuous state as in the US, according to Greenslade.

Guardian.co.uk is still the most popular UK newspaper website, with 20,622,063 unique users last month, compared to 20,499,858 in June. This may be largely due to the sports-focused coverage that the paper featured in that month, such as the Tour de France, Wimbledon and English Test cricket, reports Guardian.co.uk.  

Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic (ABCe) figures show that Guardian.co.uk had a 28.4% increase in uniques since July 2007. Meanwhile, page impressions jumped by 1.8% to 186,430,603 in July.

Telegraph.co.uk ranks second, with 18,746,025 unique users in July, having dropped by 4.9% from 19,712,622 in June. Mail Online remains in third place with 18,705,552 uniques, a 16.8% growth from 16,015,211 in June.

Year-on-year, both Telegraph.co.uk and Mail Online experienced growth in uniques since July 2007, the figures being 108.5% and 57.7%, respectively.

Sun Online has a 69% growth in uniques from July 2007 and a 3% growth since last month, reaching 15,972,490.

Telegraph.co.uk had a decrease in page impressions from 151,857,375 to 140,318,137 while Dailymail.co.uk's page impressions surged to 143,587,842 in July from 119,483,455 in June. Mail Online, meanwhile, had 143,587,842 in July.

Times Online's and The Independent site's page views were at a record high of 123,978,303 and 27,768,695, respectively.

Independent.co.uk had a 9% plunge since last month in uniques, reaching 6,588,929 while Mirror Group Digital uniques decreased by 5% since June to 5,177,230.

UK users are more valuable in terms of advertising revenue. However, the ABCe figures show that UK audience decreased since June for Mirror.co.uk and Telegraph.co.uk.

Mirror.co.uk had a drop of 73,000 to nearly 3 million uniques in the UK, whereas Telegraph.co.uk had a fall of 80,000 to 6.5 million.

Guardian.co.uk's and Times Online uniques in the UK increased to 8.5 million and 5.9 million, respectively. The figure rose for Mail Online and Sun Online to 5.5 million uniques for both titles.

The figures are expected to have an explosive growth this month, following coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Fairfax Digital website WAtoday.com.au, the first online only Australian newspaper, surpassed its expected number of unique users in the first month after its launch in June, reaching 341,887.

WAtoday.com.au has been competing with http://www.thewest.com.au/ and is almost as popular, according Fairfax Digital chief Jack Matthews.

WAtoday.com.au appeals to advertisers form sectors like banking, insurance and finance.

Users spent over four minutes on the site per visit.

US newspaper editors seem to have a positive outlook on their publications' futures, in spite of dropping revenue and job cuts that some papers experienced. As the news reallocates to the Web and other technology is being integrated, newspapers may find a way to balance themselves, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Database journalism and mobile reporting both grew, a survey by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. Staff blogs, micro sites, videography and online-only editing have all become more widespread across newspapers, demonstrating newspapers adaptation to the digital age.

Newspaper readership increased, thanks to the Internet, the survey showed. However, online advertising hasn't been able to bring in as much revenue as print.

The Internet is allowing for stories to be published faster and for updates to be more frequent, which may make the newsroom environment more demanding but also more dynamic.

"The newsroom staff producing the paper is also smaller, younger, more tech-savvy, and more oriented to serving the demands of both print and the web. The staff also is under greater pressure, has less institutional memory, less knowledge of the community, of how to gather news and the history of individual beats. There are fewer editors to catch mistakes," the survey said.

Larger papers consider it vital to preserve investigative journalism, something that distinguishes them from other new media such as blogs, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Electronic newspapers may be the next step for French newspapers, as France Télécom tests out its electronic reading device on more than a hundred people, the New York Times (NYT) reported. The Read & Go electronic reader lets users download newspaper content through the firm's wireless network and features an important aspect of the newspaper industry: advertisements.

Paul-François Fournier, France Télécom's senior vice president for online advertising, mentioned that the company's aim is to aid newspapers in succeeding in the digital age, since newspapers seem to have difficulties doing that on their own, the NYT reported.  

Seven publications are taking part in the trial, including the dailies Le Monde, Le Figaro, Le Parisien, Libération, L'Equipe (sports), Les Échos (business) and the weekly entertainment and culture magazine Télérama.

There is some anxiety over the possibility that a firm like France Télécom might take over the newspaper business, much like Google did with search advertising, the NYT reported.

However, Pascal Laroche, Libération's digital version director, said the electronic reader may be a supplement to its other editions and "will not replace the newspaper".
 
French print newspaper advertising revenue and readership is not at its best and online ad revenue and audiences haven't made up for the loss, according to the NYT.

In France, France Télécom has 24 million mobile subscribers to whom the service may be marketed. The company may even introduce Read & Go to foreign markets where it has mobile networks, like the UK.

Whether consumers or advertisers will be convinced to use the Read & Go remains to be seen. The product may be introduced next year, according to the NYT.

The University of Florida (UoF) announced plans for a new Center for Media Innovation and Research to educate students in digital media and to conduct research in the field, Editor and Publisher reported.

"The goal is to have every single student have experience in emerging media so that when they leave here they can adapt to a rapidly changing field," said John Wright, UoF's dean of the College of Journalism and Communications.

The project includes:

-"21st Century Newsroom and Laboratory", helping to merge faculty and students in print, online and broadcast journalism.
-"Digital Laboratory for Strategic Communications", offering space for advertising and PR students who work in digital media.

The center is estimated to cost $1.5 million, half of which will be paid for by the state and the rest from "private sources", Editor and Publisher reported.

Why I love this work of journalism:

It's nothing fancy, hardly a data visualization at all. It's essentially a timeline navigation of information on the Iraq War. The only visual grace note is the roulettey spin of the date slider as you move it around. But the tool is functional: It permits navigation of the same data by topic, tags or search. It engages and it works.

It is an aggregation of content reported by others... Smart people knowledgeable about public affairs paid close attention to a huge amount of information, made careful selections and used available digital technology to make it accessible and flexible in a way no print publication could.

By virtue of its form, it surfaces new understandings that a reader of the original reports would not achieve. For instance, noodle around with the "Dick Cheney" tag and you'll discover, right at the top, this entry dated . . . over 15 years ago:

Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, speaking to the Discovery Institute in Seattle, says the first President Bush was right not to invade Baghdad: "The question in my mind is how many additional American casualties is Saddam worth? And the answer is not very damned many. Stoltz also makes the necessary point that the reporting used in this project came from traditional media - The New York Times, The LA Times, The New Yorker. "The rub," Stoltz points out, "Is this original reporting cost a fortune. It was produced under the old, dying model of journalism, wherein investigative reporting is funded by advertisements for cell phones, new subdivisions, mattress-chain mega-sales, designer clothing, and so on....As Mother Jones has shown, people who are passionate about telling a story have powerful new tools at their disposal to do so. But without high-quality content-difficult, time-consuming, intellectually demanding, butt-numbing, sometimes actually dangerous reporting-the tools are just toys."

Web audiences outside the UK helped move The Telegraph online to beat The Guardian as the UK's number one news site, and now, The Telegraph is looking to turn those numbers into pounds - by finding advertisers in the territories of new readers.
 
Telegraph.co.uk, whose readership has grown 153 percent in the last year, has a more international audience than guardian.co.uk and draws just 34 percent of their online readers from the UK. The Guardian online, which has grown just 22.5 percent in the last year, draws more than 41 percent of users from the UK.

Despite numbers suggesting the majority of readers are from outside the UK, "Newspaper groups have traditionally tied themselves to a single ad network to sell all of their international online inventory," said Cameron Yuill, AdGent 007's founder and chief executive.

As worldwide audiences grow, the Telegraph Media Group's partnership with AdGent 007, a global digital advertising services company, means the Telegraph will no longer be tethered to UK advertisers and will be able to exploit their audience's advertising potential to its fullest.

Newspaper companies have been successful in generating audience and attention with their digital platforms. But the Holy Grail for newspaper companies is how to produce significant revenues online.

Companies that have had success in making money from the web -- from citizen journalism, cross-media advertising, web TV, mobile and other digital strategies -- will be featured in the World Digital Publishing Conference & Expo, to be held in Amsterdam on 15 and 16 October.

Speakers at the World Association of Newspapers event will include Caroline Little, CEO of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, Manual Mirat, CEO of Prisacom in Spain, Eric Scherer, Business Development Director of Agence France Presse's Olympics coverage, Jorma Harkonen, Director of Bonnier's MTV3 mobile strategy in Finland, and many others.

The Weblog spoke to Jim Roberts, Digital Editor at The New York Times, and Martin Gottlieb, who was appointed to the newly created position of Editor, Global Edition.

How newspapers can become international brands, the NYT joins the race

Until now, the Times hasn't specifically catered to overseas advertisers and readers.

"We need to be agile," said IHT publisher Stephen Dunbar-Johnson, "to compete much more aggressively, nose to nose, with The Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and anybody else who is competing for our readers and advertisers."

No doubt that the Times actually borrowed the continuous news outpost idea from the aforementioned competitors, which have been relying on their foreign bureaus to provide round the clock coverage.

The staff memo reaffirmed the NYT's "ambitious plans to expand in the region (Asia), particularly in India." In June, the IHT announced a partnership with the India-based Deccan Chronicle to print the Tribune's world business section in the Financial Chronicle.

With the rise of digital publishing, many news organizations are seeking to grow a previously inaccessible international readership by:

- launching a print edition abroad: several papers have rolled out editions away from home this past year, such as the FT's recently launched Middle East edition in Abu Dhabi, WSJ's partnership with business paper Mint in India, the Daily Mail's partnership with India Today to publish the Mail Today, or The Times of London's Polish edition.

- investing in an online international section: In Germany, referential weekly Der Spiegel launched an English-language International edition on its website in 2004. Five fulltime staffers are dedicated to translating Der Spiegel's content and rewriting it with an international perspective, as well as doing their own international-minded original reporting (the full case study is featured in Trends in Newsrooms 2008). The Guardian adopted a different approach, by launching a separate, foreign-based, US website, Guardian America. The Guardian is reportedly considering similar ventures in other regions.

- simply reinforcing their focus on international news in their regular coverage: the Daily Telegraph's website in the UK, which was neck to neck with the Guardian in terms of traffic in April, claims nearly two thirds of its visitors are from overseas. A well-indexed website helps to brings in a significant number of 'light' international users through search engines.

Merging "co-branded" websites but not print: a branding issue

The NYT's approach is a combination of the first two strategies: the print IHT now serves as The Times' 'global edition' (see picture), while maintaining its trademark brand name. With the proposed online merger, the NYT could also follow the second route, by hosting an international edition online, without having to extensively change its workflows (see Part 1).

The rationale to merge the websites is clearly explained in the memo: according to WebTrends, NYT's website boasts a strong international audience and 58 million global users, compared to iht.com's seven million.

"The global landscape for online news is highly competitive, making scale, speed and resources essential to success. Therefore we have determined that the best future online for the IHT and the NYT globally is through a joint international presence," said the memo.

However, the memo doesn't explicitly say why this won't be the case in print:

"The IHT should become the international print edition of the NYT, whether it is formally branded that way or not."

The main issue at stake is one of branding. "In print, there have been at least a couple of studies that show that among Tribune newspaper readers there is a great identification with the brand, that the brand means something to readers," said Gottlieb.

"More than the name, what accompanies the name, an international perspective, a sense of calling the best stories from The Times and augmenting them with unique reporting," was a combination that many readers liked.

As news organizations seek to grow their international reach, this consideration probably holds true for many that have established a reputable brand name on a local or national scale. However strong the brand name, its association with a particular place or country can potentially play against that news outlet on the international scene.
