Free daily Qué! is closing four of its Spanish editions in A Coruña, Bilbao, Mallorca and Murcia, according to Newspaper Innovation.

40% of the paper's workforce will be laid off, and publisher Vocento is asking the Spanish Ministry of Labor for a special ERE (Expediente de Regulación de Empleo) provision.

Closure of the A Coruña branch could be avoided "if the edition would merge with the other Galician edition in Vigo," and the Bilbao edition could merge with local free paper El Nervión


The 12 editions of Qué! were launched in 2005, but were owned by the Recoletos group, who sold the title in 2007.  Vocento's strategy is to "launch editions in every city where they operated a paid newspaper."

Qué! was the third national free newspaper in Spain, after 20 Minutos and Metro, with a readership of 2.2 million.  The circulation of the four dailies closed was around 120,000.

Just received from Juan Varela, the well-informed editor of Periodistas21 in Spain: "This autumn will be a great season for the press in Spain. For first time in several years, five newspapers will be launched this season. Three will be of paid and two, free. La Voz de Cádiz is the new title of Vocento, first group of the Spanish press. One of the papers of the city, Cádiz Información, prepare a free newspaper to defend oneself. This two initiatives will be in the street this week. Vocento try to restrain the grow of Joly Group, competitor in Andalucía and publisher of Diario de Cádiz, press leader in this province. Vocento is the first regional group in Andalucía. Joly, the second. Recoletos (shared by Pearson) have his new national free newspaper ready to launch. Qué (What) will be published in 15 cities and Recoletos want to launch a million copies a day. Logroño, a small regional capital in northern Spain will have his third newspaper this autumn, El Espolón. It will be published by several local businessman with a collaboration agreement with Diario de Burgos. In the beginning of 2005 Xornal de Galicia will be launch, a new regional journal in a region with a lot of newspapers dominated by La Voz de Galicia (Xornal de Galicia born from Xornal.com, a digital paper)."

Just received this from Juan Varela, our favorite blogger in Spain: "It is the first time that a one of the greatest press groups of Spain is planning to launch a national free paper (big and medium cities). Recoletos, publisher of the sport newspaper Marca, leader in this category, and the business paper Expansión (another leader), is planning a launch to get into a new market with a great growth. In 2003, the big freebies, 20 Minutes and Metro, doubled their circulation. Vocento Group, leader of regional press, has three free local papers in Bilbao, Málaga and Valencia. Spanish editors have backed-away from their opposition to free papers over the last year, as you have heard from Juan Luis Cebrián at the World Editor´s Conference in Istanbul. According to its press release, Meximerica Media, a U.S-based Spanish-language newspaper publisher, announced today the launch of Rumbo (pronounced room-bo), a new network of Spanish-language daily newspapers throughout the United States. The first four publications will be distributed beginning at the end of the second quarter of 2004 in select Texas locations including Houston, San Antonio, Austin... The newspaper design is being led by Roger Black of the US-Mexican firm Danilo Black. Meximerica Media has been acquired by Recoletos Grupo de Comunicacion S.A, one of the major media group in Spain.
