Mario Garcia is 62, but he's not too crazy about older people. They make his professional life difficult - older traditional readers who scream and complain when he redesigns their newspaper. And editors who embrace these readers and resist change."If an editor can't be redesigned, he or she must be re-assigned," he said to a roomful of editors. He got a laugh from his audience, but there is seriousness behind the remark.

Mr Mauro is Editor-in-Chief of La Repubblica, which is being sued for defamation by Mr Berlusconi for repeatedly publishing 10 questions asking the Prime Minister to explain his extra-marital relationships, the subject of widely reported public scandals this year. "This is the first time in memory of a free country that a politician is suing because of questions directed at him," Mr Mauro has said.
 

Mario García talks about how he and Alexis Johann worked with the Austrian paper, Wirtschafts Blatt's staff to reinvent the paper's focus on when and where to report a news event first. All journalists were trained to work on both online and print. García says that newsroom staff was trained to think as news people rather than newspaper people.

Jacek Utko, a newspaper designer, talks about how the industry may be saved through strong designs, using his redesigns of Eastern European papers as an example. Although he says it was not the design alone that improved the paper, it was an enhancement of the entire product that did. Circulation increased 29% in Russia, 35% in Poland, and an incredible 100% in Bulgaria he said.

Utko talked about his initial frustrations with newspaper designing and how Cirque du Soleil inspired him because he saw how they took "a creepy, rundown form of entertainment and turned it into the highest level possible of performance." This is when he realized that newspapers could do the same.

India's "second largest" English-language daily newspaper The Hindustan Times announces that it is undergoing a makeover process in the next few months that will feature transformations across all the sections, supplements as well as its Sunday magazine Brunch.

Mario R. Garcia will be in charge of the redesign. Garcia previously redesigned papers like The Miami Herald and The Wall Street Journal in the US and Sakaal Times and The Hindu in India.

Brazilian newspaper Diario de Pará has seen some significant changes that include a restructuring of editorial processes and editorial focus, reorganization of content, addition of new material, a new design as well as a new logo.

"With a new logo, the management of Diario hopes to start a new era representing a product that is more modern, with a stronger presence in the market," wrote Dr. Mario Garcia.

Mario Garcia recently published an article discussing the future model of the newspaper.  He referenced Philip Meyers recent article in American Journalism Review, which also presented some ideas on where newspapers and journalism are headed.

Garcia uses a few examples to illustrate his view of the future.  First, The Economist, with its unique "information architecture and navigation", creative visuals, distinct personality, in-depth analysis and interpretation, and focused content is an example of what many people desire to read and enjoy reading today.

The Oklahoman has followed the path of a swath of newspapers across the western hemisphere and undergone a redesign. The redesign has been headed up by Dr Mario R. Garcia.



















The regional US paper is now narrower and longer, making it easier to carry and following the trend of The Times of London and the European edition of the Wall Street Journal. Garcia believes that the future of newspapers is heading towards a smaller format.

The redesign also features a new navigational system, on page one allowing the reader to survey what's in the paper. The paper is also introducing a new typographic style. Garcia reports that two fonts have been incorporated into the design: Chronicle and Retina, that make the newspaper easier to read (especially for readers 50 and older). The page grid follows a basic six-column format. The width of the page is 60.9 picas, and each column is 9.3 picas.

Brussels-based daily newspaper DeMorgen reports a Saturday edition makeover that features a navigator which takes up nearly half of the page and announces the content inside. Furthermore, the paper launched Wax, a new section that is geared towards women but is "not only for women."

Dubai's weekly tabloid Xpress reflects the "sassy", "ireverent" and "courageous" character of its editor Nirmala Jensen, according to Mario R. Garcia.

"I am not interested in covering the school bus crash that everyone already has," said Nirmala. "I am interested in that one story that the readers have heard nothing about till they read it in our Xpress."

Garcia mentioned that the tabloid covers issues that may be perceived as taboo, such as those involving race or ethnicity.

He also mentioned the paper's diversity when it comes to content, as well as when it comes to readers' backgrounds.

"A good human interest story is the same to anybody," Nirmala said.

Opinion: UAE's dailies don't "disappear" but "reinvent"

Newspapers in Dubai do not disappear but reinvent themselves, thus boosting "staying power", according to Mario R. Garcia. However, an anonymous newspaperwoman mentioned that most of the papers have articles that are "simply too long".  

The newspaperwoman went on to say that Arabic daily Alittihad is "the most boring" but continues to be published since it is state-subsidized. Albayan's makeover made the paper more appealing to readers, whereas Alkhaleej isn't "neatly designed" or "organized". Garcia pointed out that because Albayan (see left) uses photos that are over three times as big as in other titles, it is visually more interesting to young readers who favor to "look" and not "read".

The Arabic paper that is most attractive to younger readers is Emarat al youm (see left), "with its compact tabloid format, the nice illustrations, and content that has appeal", said the newspaperwoman.

The newest addition to Dubai's English-language dailies is The National (see below left), whose design Garcia praises, mentioning that it is for the "elite reader" who wants his paper to be "perfectly organized."

"White space that travels up and down the broadsheet pages to remind everyone that there is room to grow here.  Overall, it is a sort of The Guardian of London, before it redesigned to the Berliner format. If one word describes the look of a newspaper, gravitas comes to mind here;" said Garcia.

Mario Garcia argues in his column today that, "visual briefs are a sort of magnet for readers to get into those inside pages".



Research conducted by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies has shown how important they are, and that adding a small photo enhances this further.

Garcia goes on to say: "I have taken briefs to a different level, what I call "visual briefs".  Briefs do not need to be limited to short headlines and a few lines of text. As such, I have experimented with the use of a small photograph, usually the size of a small mobile telephone screen, accompanied by a few lines of text. It has been very successful in each case."

Visual briefs are generally one of the first sections read on a newspaper front page.

In India, The Hindu has them on Page One and refer to them as "Snapshots". For The Hindu it is a strategy that they utilise on many other pages in the newspapers.

In an interview with Mario R. Garcia, Richard Curtis described USA Today's current use of color and white space as improved having a more "upscale" feel, compared to the color scheme of its launch 25 years ago.

He said that when the newspaper was launched in 1982, it used so much color in a somewhat reckless manner because it "could" - and because it seemed like a good marketing strategy.



Initially the fronts of the Money, Life and Sports sections were cyan, because the newspaper was printed in multiple location and it was hard to have print sites with identical color capabilities and press configurations.

Over twenty years ago, USA Today was a maximum 48 pages long, with 16 pages in color. Today it is 60 pages long with 20 pages in color.

To achieve this, the paper has adopted the "less ink" scheme, which Curtis said "meant less black but also less color and certainly less gratuitous color." The palette itself is more "subdued" than in the 1980's.

Curtis also pointed out that they seldom add color tints to boxed text and that they decreased the black horizontal rules.

Although this metamorphosis might have decreased the amount of "impulse buys" of the paper, it did give the paper a "more upscale appearance with a more serious approach to displaying the news."

USA Today remains the most-widely circulated daily newspaper in the US.

According to award-winning newspaper designer Mario R. Garcia, fewer sections and decreased length may actually be an answer for weekday dailies - contradicting conventional editorial and reader wisdom.

Per Andersson-Ek, associate editor of the Göteborgs Posten, said that the paper's decision to shorten from a four-section to a three-section daily in 1994 proved to be successful, as readers reacted by saying it became a "more handy, structured and easily navigated newspaper, covering more of today´s topics and talk of the town".

Sam Zell, the chairman and chief executive of Tribune Co., declared that "500 pages of news" would be trimmed weekly from the company's dozen papers in order to have a paper divided "50-50 between news content and ads."

Such statements have in effect caused editors and readers to be concerned with the risks of decreased editorial quality. A Chicago Tribune reader  posted on the chicagotribune.com comment board that she was concerned that "reducing the size of the newspaper might mean eliminating news and favoring more stories about R. Kelly and less about Tibet or Darfur."

But according to Garcia, "talented editors" are required for the task of thinning newspapers. Timothy McNulty, Chicago Tribune's public editor, says that one of the most difficult tasks for journalists today is to be able to adapt to changes in economy without losing traditions.

"I am convinced the newspaper of the next ten years will have fewer pages, published in a more compact format, with much greater coordination between online/print offerings, a more substantial local coverage, and with a design that emphasizes good navigation, clear hierarchy and service," wrote Garcia.

India's new financial daily, Mint, was launched in February last year and since then has expanded from 80,000 to 122,000 copies (see our previous interview with its editor here). As the Financial Times readies an Indian edition, it is unknown as to how it will be accepted in the market.

In an interview with famed newspaper designer Dr. Mario Garcia, Mint's editor, Raju Narisetti, said he was uncertain whether "there is real room for more than a couple of business dailies" and that there is "a bubble quality" to the "segment" issue.

According to Narisetti, there has been growth in business media such as financial channels and dailies. However, how the FT/TV18 paper will be accepted is not yet evident. There is a question of time and appetite with regard to readers.

Until recently, the FT has been excluded from India "thanks to a brazen misappropriation of its brand." Narisetti said, "If the FT/TV18 paper can raise the bar on Indian business journalism and also bring in strong ethics and journalistic standards, it would be a good addition to Mint."

Narisetti mentioned that non-business newspapers like the Hindustan Times and DNA are investing the most in business coverage. Other local newspapers have not shown the incentive to bring forth a "sizable increase in resources being devoted" for it.

Narisetti is also a World Editors Forum Board member.

The Pune-based Sakaal Media Group has launched The Sakaal Times, an English-language 24-page daily with almost 80% outsourced content.  

The Times, which launches in Pune a month after the debut of the morning compact daily The Pune Mirror, replaces the older English-language Sakaal-owned paper The Maharashtra Herald.

Starting with an initial print run of 1,000,000 copies, The Sakaal Times enters a saturated market that includes new entrants Daily News and Analysis and The Mirror as well as established papers such as The Times of India and The Indian Express.

Sakaal Media has made agreements with Dehli-based Asia-Pacific Communication Associates and other news agencies to provide the editorial content.

The Times was designed by newspaper designer Mario Garcia, who recently worked on the design of Thailand's first-ever free sheet.

Thai newspaper The Nation is launching Daily Xpress, Thailand's first-ever free daily newspaper.  

Daily Xpress is published in English, and will have a circulation of 100,000, making it the most-circulated English-language paper in Thailand. The editor of Xpress Tulsathit Taptim said the publication was aimed at "the younger generation of sophisticated readers," a market he said was untapped by Thailand's English media, reports Asia News Network.

Designed by Mario Garcia, Daily Xpress will follow a similar format to London freesheet London Lite, in focusing on metro news, sports, entertainment, and lifestyle topics.

According to Pana Janviroj, president of The Nation, the parent newspaper is also undergoing changes in both content and design. There will be an increased focus on business and political information, and the publication is working with Xpress designer Garcia to create a more user-friendly design and navigation of news items and features.

Austria’s leading financial daily, Wirtschafts Blatt, has been treading its way to integrate its print and online operations and become a 24/7 news provider. To do so, the paper, in collaboration with Mario Garcia Sr., organized workshops to reorganize the newsroom in terms of the ‘path of the story’.

The death of newspaper designer Edmund Arnold, on Feb. 2, opens insights on the way design has affected and affects newspapers and their content, and vice versa. More and more, the line of priority for content over design is being blurred.

The Wall Street Journal is considering putting an advertisement on its front page, starting next year. With a 30-member design committee, the Journal is working on its second overhaul in five years, calling it “Project Renaissance.

The Belgian broadsheet De Morgen has recently redesigned and switched to “Berliner” format. The project was headed by Mario Garcia, who did the paper’s redesign in 1994, and Martin Huisman and Christian Fortanet of Farcia Media's Spain office.

It wasn't hard to see this one coming. Dow Jones has decided to combine its print and online operations in a restructuring of the company. Where it used to be divided in print publishing, electronic publishing and community newspapers, now Dow Jones will be split between consumer media, enterprise media, and community media.

The famous financial daily, The Wall Street Journal, may be thinning itself from a width of 15 to 12 inches and the globetrotting newspaper designer Mario Garcia may be pushing for a compact, but it doesn't appear that the Dow Jones' flagship will be cut down to tabloid size.

Garcia is currently working on a redesign after having helped the Journal add color to its front page in 2002.
