How to deal with user comments: WSJ, NY Times, and Washington Post give insight
The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Washington Post all allow user comments in some form and believe that these comments add value to their news sites. The means by which they allow these comments varies, however. For example, the New York Times pre-screens user comments while the Washington Post screens comments after they have been made.
The Wall Street Journal uses both blogs and forums to allow for user comments. The blogs are available to everyone, to post a comment about any item they choose, whereas the forums require registration and are generally related to questions or columns, usually keeping the conversation more focused.
The Wall Street Journal controls their user comments by post-monitoring - searching through posts for profanity, vicious personal attacks, etc.
The New York Times provides clear guidelines for its users: no personal attacks and no vulgarity or profanity of any kind. The Times pre-monitors its user comments to ensure decency.
The New York Times’ approach is fundamentally different than other papers which allow user comments - the Times prefers erring on the side of caution as opposed to timeliness.
The Washington Post, although screening comments after they have been made, does have some technologies which catch some basic things such as profanity before a comment is posted. In addition, the Post has a “report abuse” link for other users to help identify problem posts.
How to deal with user comments - allow or not allow, pre- or post-monitor, caution or timeliness etc – are questions, which each paper must decide for itself. There doesn’t appear to be one right answer.
It does seem, however, that many papers are leaning towards allowing user comments on their websites and see the value in them.
