Hamas and Fatah use YouTube to spread propaganda

Posted by Mica Swyers on June 22, 2007 at 2:52 PM
The struggle between Gaza militant groups, Hamas and Fatah, to interrupt one another’s mediated messages has expanded onto the Internet via the popular video sharing website YouTube.  Most recently, videos depicting the execution of Samih al-Madhun, a pro-Fatah militant, appeared online, sparking video reactions and counter-reactions spreading both groups’ propaganda.

The graphic depiction of the execution features footage of Hamas’ television station, al-Aqsa TV, sparked a stir of pro-Fatah reactions online, namely videos montages venerating al-Madhun and threatening the rival group.  In response, Hamas supporters posted videos of violence committed by the deceased’s followers, including an attack on a group of blindfolded and handcuffed men.

The videos similarly portray one group as patriotic, noble, and pious while simultaneously condemning the violence and treachery of the rival faction.  Clever editing and captions are used to underline the propaganda points of each group.  Because they feature clips taken from a variety of media, it is sometimes difficult to verify the source of the original footage.

The ability to post video montages featuring video, photo, and music from a variety of sources is one reason for YouTube’s recent surge in popularity.  Nevertheless, the website follows guidelines on graphic violence which could lead to the removal of some Hamas and Fatah propaganda videos.
