UK: Northcliffe Media launches local sports sites
The Hull Daily Mail site was the first, launched this week. It includes articles and video reports from the Mail’s sports journalists, as well as user-generated content, with a focus on Hull’s four main sports clubs. This type of site marks a trend conversion: citizen journalism, multimedia content, and hyperlocal news coming together.
“Our sports staff will be working as a fully integrated multimedia team, which reflects the approach we want to take in embracing digital publishing alongside our printed products,” John Meehan, Hull Daily Mail editor said. Sites for Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Lincoln will follow.
Some teams have already abandoned their own sites to jump onto the Mail’s, says sports editor Stuart Rowson. “Every day new clubs and new leagues want to come on board. It’s big already, but it’s going to be massive.”
