UK: Independent's Simon Kelner against the digital revolution
As other newspapers invest heavily in online content, Kelner remains unconverted. Unlike many editors, Kelner views the digital revolution and integration of news sources with much skepticism. "We're happy not being pioneers, because it means we won't get shot in the back,” he said.
Though Kelner says the Independent website will receive some renovations this year, he is unconvinced of newspaper websites’ translation to reality. "I've never met anyone who ever listens to podcasts," he said. "When I saw in the Telegraph 'Get your podcast of Simon Heffer discussing David Cameron's latest policy announcement', I thought you've got to be joking! I'm not convinced that they're the future."
Further, Kelner has no tolerance for the common view of newspapers as an endangered species. “It's madness,” he said, “that we don't actually promote our own value and too many people within our own industry talk us down."
Recently, the Independent announced 40 voluntary, staff-shuffling layoffs as part of a major cost-cutting effort. Around 70 journalists applied for the layoff package, but Kelner doesn’t see this as an indication of fear. In speaking with staff members who applied for the packages, Kelner found no one who cited fears of the paper’s financial demise as a reason for applying.
"Look,” he said, “you can put whatever spin you want on it, but what we've done is go through the same process which every newspaper in the world has gone through or is going through.”

PRESS RELEASE
MARE (Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy) is about to launch a $100 billion project to solve global warming and produce clean renewable energy on an unprecedented scale. Scientists and engineers from the famous Fraunhofer Institute support the fully integrated ‘SMART’ platform that can deliver 100GW of solar power (equivalent of 120-150 nuclear power stations) and transport it safely to wherever it’s required.
This huge technical breakthrough dismisses the need to build lots more nuclear power stations with inherent dangers to consider and provides an abundance of clean renewable energy without the need to scale down human life styles.
Britain can now lead the world in the fight against global warming and within a short period of time will be able to provide sufficient clean energy for the whole of Europe and West Africa. Careful planning and financial support will enable successive governments to sell clean energy to other countries and benefit from enormous profits that amount to billions of dollars every year. This huge influx of wealth removes the problems of funding pensions and health care and provides Britain with a strong and lasting economy.
The latest UN CLIMATE STUDY (produced by more than 2,000 scientists) says global warming is accelerating faster than anticipated and the world has to make significant cuts in CO2 by the year 2015 or just eight years from now. The report says the world has the technology and the money but must act swiftly to avoid rising temperatures that can melt ice caps, raise sea levels, create widespread flooding and wipe out entire species.
A team of well known personalities is now being sought to inform the public that a solution does exist and what short-term measures can be taken to preserve our way of life. Appeals have been sent to Sir David Attenborough, Sir Richard Branson, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Bill Gates and a host of others that support the fight against global warming.
