Washington Post publishes fiction novel

Washingtonpost.com will be publishing fiction for the first time, as a series of installments of Post reporter David Hilzenrath’s novel, “Jezebel’s Tomb.”
The entire text of the 412-page novel, a modern day thriller set in the Middle East, will be published in increments on the Post’s website, each Monday and Thursday – the first installment is available.

Hilzenrath was originally turned down by publishers, until he thought of a better way to distribute his novel.

"Use the power of the Web for promotion and the power of on-demand publishing to reduce the upfront cost," said Hilzenrath.

Readers can buy the novel for $18.95, which will be printed on demand.

As noticed by the Post’s article on the book, “Several well-known novels, such as Charles Dickens's "A Tale of Two Cities" and Tom Wolfe's "The Bonfire of the Vanities," began life in serial form. Slate published a serial novel last year.”

This was also the case for most European novels of the 19th century and beginning the 20th. This choice by a major newspaper to publish a fiction novel – once again – could reflect a change in newspaper editors’ vision of newspaper content.

Perhaps, as original reporting withers amidst a flurry of sources, newspapers will revert to exclusive, serialized content such as novels and short stories, using the cost and distribution advantages of the web.

The CND is a part of the newspaper, whereas washingtonpost.com is part of a separate subsidiary of the Washington Post Company. The CND sits in the newsroom, tucked in between the National and Metro desks, and next to the in-house television studio (whose operations are affiliated with ours)
