Fiji: Newspaper ceased publication after threats from military

The Fiji Times has been closed due to censorship by the military. Also, The Daily Post in Fiji closed its office yesterday and moved out all equipment following a belief that the military were en route to do the same.

The Fiji Times website says: "We were ordered to breach the Constitution and not publish any dissenting views that may be sent to us by free citizens, as well as the views of legally elected members of the Qarase government.”

"If we do not have the freedom to publish with responsibility, then we do not publish.”

There is also a large contingent of international media in Suva at the moment - mainly from Australia and New Zealand. The Fiji Media Council yesterday issued a strong statement denouncing the illegal moves by the military and reaffirming the concept of freedom of the press.
