Universal Music charges MySpace

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on November 20, 2006 at 1:00 PM

On Friday Nov.16th, Universal Music Group launched a suit against MySpace.com for copyright infringement.
The complaint regards the tools MySpace provides for its users to upload, download and link ‘user-generated’ content, which usually consists in reality of copyrighted products. “It is the ‘user-stolen’ intellectual property of others, and MySpace is a willing partner in that theft,” the suit charged.

This suit is only one of many copyright infringement suits recently launched by media companies against popular user-sharing websites such as YouTube. Less than a month ago, Universal filed similar complaints against video-sharing websites Grouper and Bolt.
The reaction of users to and legal verdict of these suits will constitute a precedent for these types of cases, which should soar in the years to come. The debate and dilemma between online information freedom and intellectual property is open.
